Obwohl man �ber den objektiven Werth der erw�hnten Hypo thesen nicht wohl in Zweifel sein kann, so ist doch die Frage nicht abzuweisen, ob nicht die vita Agricolae selbst Eigenschaften besitze, welche die Entstehung so verschiedener Vermuthungen �ber den Ursprung und die Tendenz des B�chleins einigerma�en zu erklairen geeignet sind. Auf diese Frage wird sich eine bejahende Antwort ergeben und mit Leichtigkeit begr�nden lassen, wenn wir den In halt des Buches und dessen Bestandtheile im Anschluss an die Rei henfolge der Capitol uns vergegenwiirtigen. Das Vorwort, welches die drei ersten Capitel umfasst, schildert die Vorurtheile und die Gefahren, welche ein Schriftsteller der Kaiserzeit zu bek�mpfen habe, wenn er das Leben und die 'i'haten eines hervorragenden Mannes der Nachwelt zu �berliefern unternehme. Die Capitel 4 - 9 be handeln denjenigen Abschnitt aus Agricola's Leben, welcher der Verwaltung Britanniens voraufgeht, und zwar cap. Ilseine Knabenjahre und seine Eziehung, cap. 5 seine ersten Kriegsdienste in Bri tannien, cap. 6 seine Heirath, seine Amtscarri�re bis zur Praetur und die ihm durch Gelbe gewordene Auszeichnung, cap. 7 die Er mordung seiner Mutter und seine durch Vespasian erfolgte Ernen nung zum F�hrer der 205ten Legion in Britannien, cap. 8 das Ver h�ltnis des Agricola zu seinen Vorgesetzten, cap. 9 seine Aufnahme unter die Patrizier, die Verwaltung Aquitaniens, sein Consulat und seine Ernennung zum Oberbefehlshaber des britannischen Heeres. Cap. 10 - 42 enthalten eine geographische und ethnographische Be schreibung Britanniens, cap. 43 - 1 7 eine Geschichte der britannischen Expeditionen von Julius Caesar's Z�gen bis auf Agricola's Ankunft, wobei am ausf�hrlichsten der K�mpfe des Suetonius Paullinus gegen die K�nigin Boudicca gedacht wird. Cap. 48 - 29 geben die Feld z�ge und Eroberungen Agricola's, unterbrochen durch eine Schil derung seiner zwar milden, aber thatkr�ftigen und stets umsichti gen Verwaltung, seines Verh�ltnisses zu seinen Untergebenen, seiner Gedanken �ber eine etwaige Eroberung Irlands und der Vortheile der von Agricola zuerst ins Werk gesetzten Verwendung der Flotte. Cap. 28 erz�hlt die Schicksale und Abenteuer einerdesertirten Co horte der Usipier. Nachdem im 293ten Capitel Agricola's Vor r�cken bis an den mens Grampius berichtet ist, folgen in cap. 30 - 32 und 33 - 34, die Entscheidungsschlacht vorbereitend, die Rede des Calgacus, des F�hrers der Britannier, und die des Agricola. Die Darstellung des Verlaufes der Schlacht selber umfasst die Ca pitel 35 - 37, woran sich cap. 38 schlie�t, welches �ber die Wir kungen der Schlacht berichtet und die auf Agricola's Befehl erfolgte Umschifl'ung Britanniens meldet, welcher schon cap. 40 als eines hervorragenden Ereignisses gedacht worden war. Cap. 39 schil dert die Empfindungen, welche die Siegesnachricht in dem eifer s�chtigen Kaiser hervorrief, cap. 40 die R�ckkehr des Agricola nach Rom, sein Zusammentreffen mit dem Kaiser und sein bescheidenes Auftreten. Die Verh�ltnisse r�cken die Gefahr, als ein Opfer der kaiserlichen Eifersucht zu fallen, dem Agricola immer n�her; doch gelingt es ihm, durch weise M�fsigung die Katastrophe zu beschw� ren (cap. 44. Cap. 43 berichtet �ber seinen Tod, dessen Ur sachen im Dunkeln bleiben, der aber noch zu rechter Zeit erfolgte, um ihm den Anblick der tiefsten Erniedrigung Roms zu ersparen (cap. Die Klage um den Verstorbenen und die Aufforderung, sein Andenken durch Nacheiferung zu ehren, bilden den Schluss (cap. 45.
