Die Codices Palatini germanici (Cod. Pal. germ.) bilden heute die alteste, uber Jahrhunderte gewachsene grossere Sammlung deutscher Manuskripte, die geschlossen erhalten ist. Uberwiegend handelt es sich bei den Palatini germanici um die volkssprachigen Anteile der Schlossbibliotheken der Heidelberger Kurfursten und ihrer Familien. Die insgesamt 848 Handschriften waren bis zum Dreissigjahrigen Krieg Teil der zu ihrer Blutezeit weltberuhmten Heidelberger Bibliotheca Palatina. Unter dieser Bezeichnung werden im Kern die Buchbestande der Universitat, der Stiftsbibliothek in der Heiliggeistkirche und der Schlossbibliothek der Kurfursten von der Pfalz verstanden, die von Kurfurst Ottheinrich (1502-1559; reg. 1556-1559) vereinigt worden waren. Durch wertvolle Zugange wurde sie auch spater noch vermehrt. Etwa ein Drittel des Gesamtbestandes uberliefert Medizinisches und Alchemisches. Die zweitgrosste Gruppe ist die der theologischen Codices. Etwa 120 Handschriften lassen sich den Historici zuordnen. Erst an vierter Stelle sind die gut 100 Handschriften zu verzeichnen, die mittelhochdeutsche und fruhneuhochdeutsche Literatur uberliefern.Auf ausdrucklichen Wunsch des Papstes war die Bibliothek nach der Eroberung Heidelbergs durch katholische Truppen im Jahr 1622 dem Vatikan als Kriegsbeute ubergeben worden. Insgesamt gelangten so etwa 3500 Handschriften und mindestens 12.000 gedruckte Titel nach Rom. Die lateinischen, griechischen und hebraischen Handschriften sowie die Gesamtzahl der Drucke befindet sich noch heute dort, wahrend die Codices Palatini germanici aufgrund von Vereinbarungen, die wahrend der Pariser Friedensverhandlungen getroffen worden waren, 1816 nach Heidelberg zuruckkehrten.Der erste Band der neu bearbeiteten Kataloge der Universitatsbibliothek Heidelberg umfasst den Signaturenabschnitt der Codices Palatini germanici 1 bis 181. Am Anfang stehen im hier behandelten Signaturensegment verschiedene Texte und Sammelhandschriften astrologisch-astronomischen Inhalts. Einen umfangreichen Bestandteil mit uberwiegend theologischer Literatur leiten zwei mehrbandige illuminierte Ubersetzungen der Bibel aus den Werkstatten Ludwig Henfflins (Cod. Pal. germ. 16-18) und Diebold Laubers (Cod. Pal. germ. 19-23) ein. Reformatorisches Schrifttum ist in dem beschriebenen Teilbestand unter anderem durch Abschriften von Predigten Martin Luthers vertreten (Cod. Pal. germ. 41-49). Hierunter befindet sich auch ein aus dem Jahr 1530 stammendes Autograph des Reformators (Cod. Pal. germ. 40). Es folgen einige Handschriften mit literarischen Texten. Hierzu gehoren beispielsweise der 'Ackermann aus Bohmen' des Johannes von Tepl (Cod. Pal. germ. 76), der Prosaroman 'Pontus und Sidonia' (Cod. Pal. germ. 142) oder der 'Herpin' Elisabeths von Hessen-Nassau (Cod. Pal. germ. 152). Aus dem Besitz beziehungsweise dem Umfeld der fur ihre literarischen Interessen bekannten Pfalzgrafin Mechthild (1419-1482) stammen unter anderem ein Manuskript mit den 'Translatzen' des Niklas von Wyle (Cod. Pal. germ. 101) und ein Exemplar des 'Buchs der Beispiele' von Antonius von Pforr (Cod. Pal. germ. 84).
