About the Book

English summary: Twice between 1789 and 1819, Weimar was a laboratory and prism of Russian diplomacy and German territorial politics. In the critical period of the transition from imperial to constitutional politics in Germany, similar developments occurred that also shaped Russian foreign policy and, from a modern perspective, illuminates its structural changes. Alexander I, more actively than previously thought, pursued his political goals in Germany, and, relying on traditional resource of marriage to create the alliances he desired, turned to Weimar in 1804 to facilitate the union of his sister, Maria Pavlovna, to a German prince. After the defeat of Napoleon and the Congress of Vienna, Weimar was again a center of Russian attention and through it, was finally made aware, more haltingly than previously known, of how the Crisis of 1816-1819 was a threat to the stability of the political order created after 1815. The political decision making processes, manipulations, and structural changes emerge in the internal family letters of Maria Pavlovna and other correspondents. Likewise it is clear that not only were the structural changes in European power-politics noticed in the small court of Weimar, but was also considerably shaped by them. This study highlights the political importance of these letters and offers a contribution to an expanded cultural history of diplomacy and foreign policy.
