Die Schrift des Dr. Duchenne uber die fortschreitende bewegungs-ataxie hat in Frankreich grosses Aufsehen er regt, wie die zahlreichen Beobachtungen am Krankenbett. Und am Sectionstisch beweisen, die in so kurzer Zeit ver offentlicht werden sind und welche zugleich die Angabe des Herrn Duc7z�nn� best�tigen, dass diese schlimme Krankheit in Frankreich haufig ist.. In Deutschland hatte man diese Krankheit l�ngst unter dem Namen Tabes dorsualis gekannt, und die deutschen Forscher waren in der pathologischen Anatomie und Histologie der atai'ci�'w'eit voran geschritten. Bei alledem herrschte bei uns, wie in andern L�ndern ei nige Unklarheit, indem man mit dem Namen Tabes -dorsualis verschiedene Begriffe verband und die hier in Frage ste hende Mo-tilit�tsst�rung als Lahmung oder Parese bezeich nete. Ich selbst habe so manche F�lle von Tabes dorsualis beobachtet, aber theils hatte ich keine Vormerkungen daruber niedergeschrieben, theils sind solche Vormerkungen, mit so manchen anderen Papieren bei den eingreifenden Ereignissen meines wechselvollen Lebens mir abhanden gekommen; von mehreren Kranken dieser Art habe ich mir aber eine so treue Erinnerung bewahrt" dass ich dieselbe bei der Be arbeitung dieser Schrift ben�tzen konnte, wenn sie auchnicht ausreich'te, zuverlassige Krankheitsgeschichten zu ver fassen. Unmittelbar nach dem Erscheinen der Duchenne' schen Schrift hatte ich Gelegenheit, dieselbe Krankheit zu sehen und als Ataxie zu erkennen, und ich durfte wohl der erste Arzt in Deutschland gewesen sein, der (1859) eine solche Diagnose gestellt hat; habe daf�r auch mehrseitigen Widerspruch gefunden. Aber das half nun einmal nichts, dass manche Aerzte, wie jener Kaiser von China, von der neuen Krankheit nichts wissen wollten: sie war wirklich da, war sogar h�ufig und einer ihrer radicalsten Widersacher verstand sich bald dazu, einen "ataktischen nach Wies baden zu schicken. 'die Mehrzahl der Aerzte, besonders die auf dem Lande, welchen_die Literatur weniger zugangig ist, standen'noch auf dem Standpunkte der Hippokratischen Tabes dorsualis. Was man von diesem Standpunkt aus sieht, ist zwar wahr und klar, aber man sieht nicht Alles. Ich glaubte daher, den praktischen Aerzten einen Dienst zu leisten, wenn ich eine auf die bisherigen'beobachtungen gegrundete Beschreibung der bewegungs-ataxie bearbeitete und einige Collegen, welche ich dar�ber sprach, traten die ser Meinung bei 'und ermunterten mich zu dieser Arbeit. Von einer abgeschlossenen Monographie konnte nat�rlich nicht die Rede sein, ich stellte mir-dagegen die Aufgabe, die bis jetzt erhobenen Thatsachen zu sammeln und zu ord nen, sie von einem gewonnenen pathologischen Gesichts punkte zu �berschauen und. Namentlich auf die L�cken un seres Wissens aufmerksam zu machen. Allenthalben aber war ich bestrebt, jedem Verdienst gerecht zu werden.
