Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2017 im Fachbereich Geschichte - Amerika, Note: 1,0, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main (Historisches Seminar), Veranstaltung: Die Geschichte der USA vom Kampf um die Unabhängigkeit bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika herrschte schon ab dem 17. Jahrhundert große Uneinigkeit zwischen den Nord- und den Südstaaten, wenn es um das Thema der Sklavenhaltung ging. Wenngleich man erst ab 1776 von Staaten sprechen kann und auch dann erst von den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika die Rede sein kann, beschäftigte diese Problematik die Bürger der USA bis in die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Zwischen 1861 und 1865 kam es zum amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg, bei dem durch den Sieg der Nordstaaten die Sklavenhaltung endgültig verboten wurde. Die ersten britischen Siedler ließen sich 1607 in Virginia nieder und fanden dort ideale Wetterbedingungen und einen fruchtbaren Boden vor, welche die besten Voraussetzungen für landwirtschaftliches Arbeiten boten. Auf ganz andere Bedingungen hingegen stießen die ersten Siedler weiter im Norden: Im Jahr 1620 ließen sich Puritaner im heutigen Neuengland nieder und das Land, welches sie vorfanden, war karg und die Landwirtschaft brachte hier nur mäßige Erträge ein. Während im Süden die Landwirtschaft, ab 1793 vor allem der Baumwollanbau und -export, florierte und schon bald ein Großteil der körperlichen Arbeit von Sklaven verrichtet wurde, gab es im primär auf Industrie ausgerichteten Norden nur sehr wenige Sklaven. Die Nordstaaten vertraten die Ansicht, dass die Sklaverei abgeschafft werden muss und ließen diese deshalb per Gesetz zwischen 1776 und 1804 sukzessive verbieten, die Südstaaten wiederum hielten weiter an ihrer Sklavenhaltergesellschaft fest. Um das politische Gleichgewicht im gerade erst als unabhängig erklärten Amerika nicht in Gefahr zu bringen, versuchte man mit gesetzlichen Regelungen, den Interessen beider Lager, die der Sklavengegner
