Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Der Begriff „Balanced Scorecard" (BSC) steht für ein Managementsystem, welches von Robert S. Kaplan und David P. Norton Anfang der Neunziger Jahre entwickelt wurde. Die BSC ist ein Managementkonzept zur Kommunikation und Umsetzung von Strategien. Dieses Kapitel soll einen kurzen Überblick über das Konzept der BSC geben. Darüber hinaus wird der Versuch unternommen, vom ursprünglichen BSC-Konzept eine Überleitung auf den speziellen Themenbereich Wissensmanagement zu schaffen. Die BSC ist ein innovatives Controllinginstrument mit dem sich materielle und immaterielle Güter eines Unternehmens entwickeln, darstellen, steuern und kontrollieren lassen. Somit können auch bisher schwer messbare Größen, wie zum Beispiel das intellektuelle Kapital eines Unternehmens, sichtbar gemacht werden. Der Ansatz der BSC bietet die Möglichkeit der Verknüpfung von qualitativen und quantitativen Zielen in einem gemeinsamen Kennzahlensystem. Da der BSC ein strategiekonformes Konzept zugrunde liegt, lassen sich die Inhalte individuell anpassen. Ein „Abschreiben" von anderen Unternehmensstrategien geht also nicht und hätte auch keinen Sinn. Mit seinen besonderen Absichten ist das Konzept der BSC unabhängig von der Betriebsgröße in jedem Unternehmen anwendbar. Der BSC liegt ein Kommunikationsprozess zugrunde, welcher eine Strategieformulierung wesentlich erleichtern kann. Vision und Strategie eines Unternehmens werden im Rahmen eines Projektes auf Top-Management-Ebene konkretisiert und ausformuliert. Eine wichtige Voraussetzung ist allerdings, dass eine Strategie im Unternehmen bereits existiert. Die BSC kann die Unternehmensstrategie evaluieren, aber nicht entwickeln! Die strategischen Ziele werden im gesamten Unternehmen kommuniziert und mit Maßnahmen verbunden. Die BSC involviert somit alle nachgelagerten Einheiten und erfasst die ganze Organisation.
