About the Book

English summary: During the very successful excavations by Hartmut Kuhne at the Tell Sheikh Hamad site in northeastern Syria in 1978, numerous and quite varied texts were discovered. Next to the cuneiform scripts from the Middle and Neo-Assyrian periods, among the monuments there were also numerous Old Aramaic sources, most in the form of so-called dockets, that is, heart-shaped writings that were originally written with threads on various materials, most-likely wood, parchment, or papyrus and which bore the requisite stamp of witnesses. These sources are mostly concerned with debt securities rendered in either silver or barley. Because the texts were mostly found in places where Neo-Assyrian cuneiform texts also came to light and because there is a frequent similarity in names from known person in these sources, archaeologists are sure that the materials were once part of a once unified archive.
