About the Book

English summary: For a long time, the scholar R.A. Fando was concerned with the study of the emergence and developments of eugenics as a scientific school of thought that changed into a social movement. This book The Development of Eugenics in Russia: cognitive and socio-cultural aspects represents a fundamentally academic work although it has been written in the language of popular science, which makes it understandable and interesting to a wider audience. The scholar has based his work on extensive archival sources, the diaries and letters of scientists by means of which the reader is able to access the voices of the period, a period that lay behind us in the past and yet appears to us to be very close and understandable in the present. The author clearly explains to the reader that without direct contact with the historical sources the study of the past is impossible. This book is for all readers who are interested in the history of science and the socio-political history of the 20th century. Roman Alexeewitsch Fando, the author of this book, doctor of biological sciences, lecturer of the Vavilov Institute for the History of Natural Sciences and Engineering of the Russian Academy of Sciences, is the author of a hundred scientific publications on the history of biology and the philosophy of science including The Development of Scientific School for Russian Genetics, 1930-1940 (2005), Humanity: Biology, Psychology, Culturology (2007), and The Emergence of Human Genetics in Russia: the interface between science and politics, (2013).
