Die ahnlichkeitstheoretischen Methoden sind langst zu einem wich- tigen Instrument der ingenieurwissenschaftlichen Forschung geworden. Das vorliegende Buch, das aus den Seminarkursen hervorgegangen ist, die yom Verfasser 1966 bis 1969 in den Farbenfabriken Bayer in Lever- kusen durchgefiihrt wurden, hat zum Ziel, dem ingenieurwissenschaft- lich tatigen Forscher und dem Studierenden einen vertieften Einblick in die Methoden der Ahnlichkeitstheorie zu vermitteln. Da man diese Methode nur dann sicher und sachkritisch auf For- schungsprobleme anwenden kann, wenn iiber ihre Grundlagen und ihre Tragweite Klarheit besteht, werden im 1. Kapitel die erkenntnistheore- tische Basis und die logische Struktur der Dimensionstheorie ausfiihrlich und didaktisch neu durchgeformt behandelt: Den Ausgangspunkt bildet die Darstellung von physikalischen und technischen Sachverhalten als mengentheoretische Relationen zwischen physikalischen GroGen, aus der heraus u. a. die Fragen der grundsatzlichen mathematischen For- mulierbarkeit der physikalisch-technischen Zusammenhange, der In- varianz und der dimensionslosen Darstellbarkeit von physikalischen Beziehungen sowie die formal-Iogische Natur des Dimensionsbegrilles zwanglos und folgerichtig diskutiert werden. Die methodologischen Fragen der Anwendung der Ahnlichkeits- theorie werden im 2. Kapitel ausfiihrlich diskutiert. Man ist beim Er- forschen von komplexen physikalisch-technischen Sachverhalten, fUr die eine theoretisch fundierte mathematische Formulierung des Problems nicht vorliegt, haufig auf die Dimensionsanalyse der problemrelevanten GroGen und die Aufstellung eines vollstandigen Satzes voneinander linearunabhangiger dimensionsloser GroGen (pi-GroGen) angewiesen.
