a.k.a. Dick Sands, A Captain at Fifteen [Years]
Dick Sand is a fifteen-year-old boy whoserves on the schooner Pilgrim, a whaler that normally voyages the Pacific. This hunting season has been unsuccessful, and as they plan to return home three people request passage to Valparaiso: Mrs Weldon, wife of the hunting firm's owner with her five-year-old son, his old nanny Nan and her entomologist cousin.
Several days into the journey, they encounter a shipwreck with five African-American survivors plus a dog, all of whom are brought onboard. They later encounter a whale, reluctantly leaving Dick responsible for the ship and crew. The whale destroys the whaling boat, leaving Dick in charge of the ship; only the shipwreck survivors are well enough to help him.
The ship's cook, Negoro, has other plans after desroying one of the ships compasses and sabatoging the other one.
