About the Book

In 1964, a young lady from Chicago started a journey of discovery. In an opposite movement of discoveries such as "that" of America, in the eve of the fifteen century. Madeline Smith left Chicago on June 10th, 1964 to begin a journey that lasted approximately sixty days. Madeline went to discover Europe. However, before leaving her continent, she visited a simulacrum of the entire world in one city that claims to be its capital. We'll See You at The Fair! On June 10th and 11th, Madeline visited the 1964 New York World's Fair. Two days later, she boarded a cruise ship named Nieuw Amsterdam leaving the port in New York City. So thus, her journey began. Madeline recorded almost every single day in a travel diary. The diary is a preformatted travel log published by Samuel Ward - Boston. The Samuel Ward Co. was a book and stationery company begun by Samuel Ward (b. 1845 in Newton, Massachusetts) in 1868 Boston or Cambridge. In 1905 the company suffered heavy losses due to a fire. In 1913 the company's name changed to Samuel Ward Mfg. Co. The travel diary has several sections, beginning with "Preparatory Information" with practical information about luggage, distances between cities, currencies, passport, visas, and vaccinations. The second section deals with specific "Shipboard Information," followed by an article entitled "Travel Abroad Information" and "Other Information."Madeline tried to fill the sections accordingly, but, at some point, she might have given up. The appeal of her new adventures certainly left little time to write. She opted to live instead of write! Under the rubric of "The Route and Other Plans," she registered dates and places in addition to means of transportation briefly: She also traced her movements from cities to cities and different countries in travel charts. One more comprehensive and less detailed, and another one with precise points of arrival and departure in the European continent: It is interesting to read the highlights of the trip that Madeline chose to register under the homonym section. Her choices might not be the same as those of the readers of her diary. Moreover, although her trip lasted until August 19th, the last " highlight" on the list occurred nine days before the end of the journey. By reading her account of those final days in Europe, it is clear that little time was left to spend writing. Many touristic activities and, for sure, lots of parties! It is easy to capture her enthusiasm and joie de vivre from her narration of those special days. Mostly, Madeline is optimistic and grateful for what is being offered to her: windows to a new world and new ways of life. She runs out of adjective to praise the beauty she encounters. Places are lovely; the weather is pleasant, people are nice, events are fascinating, dancers and musicians are excellent. She picks one less used adjective to describe an evening with new friends in Bergen, Norway: "I had a tremendous time and shall remember Bergen because of them." New flavors also are noted by her, expressing the hunger to learn, to experience the unknown. She makes sure to write down what she had to drink and eat: Brussel's waffles, paella, French onion soup, beers of different nationalities, wine... lots of wine! Madeline very often repeats a curious comment about things she sees or experiences: "typical." Typical English countryside, typical French villages, typical dresses or food or sounds. It seems that she is examining her prior impressions against the real things: " all the homes, landscape and people typify the English so very well," she concludes about what she sees in England. The same comments recur throughout the diary. She expresses the conformity of things based on her expectations. Or not. We have here a "typical" travel diary, to use Madeline's word. Possibly, the only one Madeline Raspanti (née Smith) wrote in her life.
