A revolução de Abril de 74, em Portugal inspirou a democratização dos países europeus sob ditaduras fascistas, como a Espanha e a Grécia, e até o Brasil, na América do Sul. A revolução portuguesa pode ser considerada, porém, o primeiro triunfo do movimento de Maio de 68, em França, o qual, sob o lema marcusiano de "exigir o impossível", promoveu um confronto radical com as tradições e a cultura ocidentais (sendo que o movimento de "contra-cultura" realizou um longo caminho após Nietzsche e o advento do Modernismo e todos os ismos culturais de que Dadá é expoente) e despoletou a libertação sexual que é, de facto, a verdadeira revolução nascida nas ruas parisienses. É com este pano de fundo que encontramos a figura de Leandro, personagem central deste romance, que, crescendo na Madeira, ilha portuguesa, sob o domínio fascista, procura superar as suas limitações materiais e culturais numa demanda sempre insatisfeita do mundo feminino. A revolução de 1974, soltando os ventos da liberdade, encontrou uma sociedade insular medíocre e incapaz de conviver com a democracia e as mudanças sociais, facilmente corrompida por falta do cimento cultural. Leandro parecia ter encontrado a salvação, pelo encontro amoroso com Luísa, aparentemente ingénua e simples, mas até esta relação rapidamente se diluiu na teia de relações onde a beleza se deixa corromper pelo poder e pelos pequenas migalhas do assalto ao novo aparelho político. Nesta vertigem dos novos tempos vogam as personagens como vítimas de naufrágio, sem tábua a que se agarrarem. Apeados os seus comandantes e deuses, vivem desesperadamente procurando nem sabem o quê e, por isso, confundem o amor com o deleite sensorial. Insaciado mais que insatisfeito, Leandro atira-se para o mar revolto. Inicia uma demanda na busca do auto-conhecimento, pela única via que lhe restava, num mundo onde toda a contra-cultura tornou impossível a existência de Penélope, pela inverosimilhança de qualquer herói que a mereça. Numa ânsia vertiginosa, Leandro busca conhecer pelo excesso, mas só cultivara a busca das sensações, onde se perde de modo tão pouco trágico como se perde a sua ilha.
About the Author: Nasceu em 1956 na ilha da Madeira, Portugal. Professor, publicou em 2011, na Editora "O Liberal", "O Destino das Vogais", colectânea de crónicas e artigos de opinião publicados anteriormente na imprensa madeirense. Em 2013, publicou no " CreatSpace", da "Amazon", o livro de contos "Não poderei morrer tranquilamente".
