Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 1995 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 1, Freie Universität Berlin (Germanistik), Veranstaltung: Zivilisationskritik in der DDR-Literatur, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Es ist ein für Hilbigs Schreiben typisches Verfahren, scheinbar belanglose Tätigkeiten, welchen seine zumeist von Müdigkeit befallenen Figuren nachgehen, durch die Schilderung eines ungewöhnlichen Vorkommnisses, einer schockartigen Erfahrung oder einer obsessiven Phantasie mit Bedeutung aufzuladen. Stehen die Figuren unter einem unausweichlichen Eindruck, der ihr Bewusstsein ganz besetzt hält, setzt eine Reflektionsbewegung ein, durch die sie sich der sinnlichen Wahrnehmungen und letztlich ihrer selbst zu vergewissern suchen. Diese Phantasmagorien sind es zugleich, welche das herrschende Bild von der Realität außer Kraft setzen und aus diesem getilgte Spuren der Wirklichkeit zum Vorschein bringen. So beginnt die Erzählung "Der Geruch der Bücher" mit dem Erwachen des Ich-Erzählers in einer Ost-Berliner Wohnung, wo ihn der "dumpfe Geruch der Bücher" (3) einer dort platzierten immensen russischen Bibliothek in einen Zustand zwischen Wachen und Träumen versetzt. Die Bücher stammen aus dem Besitz eines intellektuellen Exilrussen, der eine Zeit lang die Wohnung gemietet hatte und - "an seinem plötzlich heimatlosen Besitz irre geworden" (3) - irgendwann vor ihnen geflüchtet war. Wie der Leser später erfährt, handelt es sich um Bücher, die im Heimatland des Russen verboten waren und die aus diesem Grund "verrufene und subversive" (9) Gerüche angenommen hatten. Die Geruchsaussonderung sei an diesem Wintermorgen "durch Licht oder Wärme" (3) verstärkt worden, da der Erzähler die Wohnung in der Nacht überheizt hat. Der Geruchseindruck ist schließlich so intensiv, dass er mit dem Gefühl, keine Luft mehr zu bekommen, das Fenster öffnet. Hilbig führt hier vor, wie die Obsession durch eine sinnliche Wahrnehmung eine Fluchtbewegung auslöst, der abgeschlossene Inn
