Décembre 1847. Eileen et Wyatt, les derniers survivants du clan des O'Callaghan, fuient l'Irlande et le comté du Kerry: la Grande Famine a dévasté leur famille et mis l'île d'Émeraude à genoux. Ils émigrent donc, à l'image des milliers des paysans irlandais - les cottiers - pour qui le choix était simple: fuir ou mourir de faim. Disant adieu aux splendeurs des lacs de Killarney, à leur frère déporté en Australie et à leurs morts, Eileen et son petit frère embarquent pour New York où ils espèrent, comme tant d'autres, trouver un avenir.
Mais ce n'est pas dans le Nord des États-Unis qu'ils le trouveront: dérouté, le clipper les emmènera plus loin que prévu, dans un monde bien étrange et dont ils ne connaissent rien: La Louisiane, le Sud. C'est donc parmi les Créoles, les Cajuns, les Indiens, les planteurs et les pilotes de steamers, sur les showboats et dans les bayous, sur le Mississippi enfin, qu'Eileen devra achever sa mission: mettre son frère en sécurité.

Un monde interlope, bigarré, en pleine mutation et au bord de la rupture, où Eileen aura bien du mal à choisir sa place. Et, tandis que Wyatt trouve sa place et son bonheur à la barre d'un de ces navires mythiques qui sillonnent l'un des plus grands fleuves du monde, Eileen part à la poursuite d'un fantôme...
