About the Book

English summary: In a dramatic appeal on November 27, 1095, Pope Urban II called on Latin Christianity to head east to "liberate" the Holy Land from the Muslims. But how could it happen that a religion whose founder preached peace declared a campaign of war a sacred act? And what constitutes a "holy" war anyway? This book examines the origin and development of the idea of the Christian "holy war," beginning with Constantine the Great, in order to understand why highly-educated theologians such as Bernard of Clairvaux could claim that to kill a heathen would honor Christ. In analyzing this development, the not insignificant role of the Byzantine emperor Heraclius and its reception in the West is comprehensively acknowledged for the first time, shining a light on the influence of the Byzantines on the emergence of the idea of a Christian holy war.
