Ein Großteil der Märkte hat sich seitdem neu sortiert. Teilweise wurden ganze Geschäfts-zweige in das Internet verlagert. In der Musikindustrie wurde z.B. der Verkauf von Tonträgern weitestgehend durch den Vertrieb von Downloads ersetzt. In anderen Bereichen war für eine erfolgreiche Etablierung der mit dem World Wide Web entstandenen Technologien die Zeit jedoch noch nicht reif genug. So blieben manche Handelssektoren bisher weitestgehend unberührt von dieser Welle. Ein Beispiel hierfür ist der Lebensmittelhandel. Laut einer Studie von Wagner und Wiehenbrauk (2014) betrug der Marktanteil des Internetvertriebs von Lebensmittel im Jahr 2010 lediglich 0,3 Prozent des Gesamtumsatzes in Deutschland. Im Rahmen dieser Studie prognostizieren diese jedoch für das Jahr 2020 einen Marktanteil von 20 Prozent (ebd., S. 11). Verantwortlich für das enorme Wachstum dieses Geschäftsfelds seien zum einen veränderte Gewohnheiten durch die fortschreitende Digitalisierung, zum anderen werde auch der Faktor Demografie immer wichtiger, so die Wirtschaftsprüfer. In den kommenden Jahren ist ein immer größerer Teil der Gesellschaft auf Grund eingeschränkter Mobilität vor allem im Bereich der Lebensmittel auf Lieferung ihrer Einkäufe, dem sogenannten Home Delivery Service angewiesen. Ein weiterer Treiber könnte in der Zunahme der Ressourcenknappheit liegen. So wird z.B. der Platz auf Deutschlands Straßen und Parkplätzen immer knapper, außer-dem wird ein steigender Treibstoffpreis vorhergesagt. Eine Bündelung von mehreren Bestellungen in einer Auslieferungstour ermöglicht grundsätzlich eine effizientere Ressourcennutzung, als wenn jeder Kunde seine Einkäufe im Supermarkt erledigt.
