Les principaux domaines de l'histoire militaire comprennent l'histoire des guerres, des batailles et des combats, l'histoire de l'art militaire et l'histoire de chaque service militaire spécifique.Il y a plusieurs façons de classer la guerre. L'une d'entre elles est la distinction entre la guerre conventionnelle et la guerre non conventionnelle, où le terme "conventionnel" désigne des forces armées bien identifiées qui se combattent relativement ouvertement et directement, sans armes de destruction massive.
