Aérodrome de Fayence, dans le Var, un jour de décembre 2010, Chris va tenter de réaliser une performance: le gain de 5000 mètres d'altitude en planeur. Les phases du vol sont décrites ainsi que la beauté grandiose des Alpes. La visibilité étant exceptionnelle ce jour de mistral, le pilote aperçoit le mont Blanc et la Corse. Il a une réserve d'oxygène de 45 minutes et doit utiliser le masque à oxygène à partir de 4000 mètres d'altitude. Lorsqu'il termine son gain d'altitude, il lui reste encore 15 minutes d'oxygène. Cette réserve est amplement suffisante pour prolonger son vol de quelques minutes et assurer le temps de la descente, mais est-ce bien de l'oxygène ? Et si sa bouteille avait été sabotée ?
Chris poursuit sa montée, fasciné par le blanc immaculé des manteaux neigeux desquels émergent des barres rocheuses qui se découpent dans un bleu d'une pureté céleste. Il devrait maintenant redescendre, mais il a perdu toute notion de la réalité. Il entre peu à peu dans un voile noir, dû à l'ivresse des cimes, et perd conscience. Le planeur continue de monter à 1 m/sec, stabilisé par le conservateur de cap et d'assiette. Privé d'oxygène, il franchit les barrières qui séparent son conscient de son inconscient. Plus il monte et plus il descend au profond de lui-même. Tous les 200 mètres, entre 8000 et 9800 mètres, il retrouve dans chaque nouveau chapitre, une des femmes qu'il a aimées. Dans cette partie, les rapports entre les hommes et les femmes, ainsi que les difficultés de la vie en couple, sont analysées.
Quelques mois avant, Chris est victime d'une horrible machination. Il se retrouve dans un hôpital psychiatrique, sans comprendre ni pourquoi, ni comment. Il va perdre pied, complètement déstabilisé, et sombrer dans un délire paranoïaque. Macha sa belle compagne ukrainienne l'aurait-elle trahi ? Il se souvient de leur rencontre à Odessa et de tous ces jours heureux passés avec elle. Non, comment aurait-elle pu le trahir ? Sorti de l'hôpital, Il entame alors une folle cavale pour fuir un danger qu'il ne parvient pas encore à identifier. Il ne le fera que plus tard, en comprenant que le crash avec son avion en avril 1999, avait été dû à un sabotage. Il cherche à savoir quels sont ses ennemis. Mais entre temps, les gens que Chris dérange ont demandé l'élimination de Chris à une organisation mafieuse, 1984 . Cette organisation sabote la bouteille d'oxygène, et Chris presque inconscient, se pose dans un champ de neige, près de la station de ski Isola 2000 . Va-t-il s'en sortir ? L'équipe de réanimation fait tout ce qu'elle peut, ...
Lentement absorbé dans le trou noir Sagittarius A étoile, Chris va remonter le temps jusqu'à son enfance, et à ses parents à Lvov en Pologne en 1942 pendant la seconde guerre mondiale. Cette ville est maintenant ukrainienne et s'appelle Lviv.
