Frappierend ist vor allem, auf welche vielseitige Weise insbesondere nach Garibaldis Tod am 2. Juni 1882 von dessen Mythos bis weit ins 20. Jahrhundert Gebrauch gemacht wurde. Wie und warum haben sich Republikaner, Radikale, Linksliberale und Monarchisten, Sozialisten, Faschisten und Kommunisten immer wieder auf den "Helden zweier Welten" bezogen? Mit Hilfe des Konzeptes des "politischen Mythos" rekonstruiert und analysiert Jessica Kraatz Magri die intensive und langlebige Symbolproduktion um die Figur Garibaldi erstmals systematisch uber die Epochengrenzen hinweg. Dabei zeigt die Autorin, dass der Garibaldi-Mythos je nach historischer Situation legitimierende, delegitimierende oder gar revolutionare Funktion entfalten konnte. Die immer wiederkehrende Aktualitat Garibaldis beruhte darauf, dass sich im Mythos des Volkshelden die fur das 19. und fruhe 20. Jahrhundert so wesentliche Frage nach der Organisation politischer Partizipation, d.h. das umkampfte Verhaltnis von Masse und Macht, narrativ, symbolisch und rituell verhandeln liess.
