Es ist wissenschaftlicher Konsens, dass der Traum das Produkt des Unbewussten ist. Aber was ist das Unbewusste? Definitionsgemass ist dieses weder einer empirischen noch einer phanomenologischen Deskription zuganglich. Die vorliegende Arbeit hat sich die Aufgabe gestellt, aus einer detaillierten und umfassenden phanomenologischen Analyse des Traumgeschehens mittels einer wissenschaftlich exakt angegebenen und durchgefuhrten Methode (der so genannten reduktiv-regressiven Analyse) auf die notwendigen und wahrscheinlichen Wirkfaktoren zuruckzuschliessen, ohne die der Traum in seiner Phanomenalitat nicht erscheinen konnte. Uber diesen Umweg gelingt es im weiteren auf zwanglose Weise, die innere Natur des Unbewussten zu bestimmen und somit erstmals wissenschaftlich nachprufbar uber den Ursprung des Traums und das Wesen des ihm zugrunde liegenden Unbewussten, mithin uber das Verhaltnis des letzteren zum Bewusstsein genauere Aussagen zu treffen. Dabei stellt sich heraus, dass der Traum in seiner Entstehung und in seiner Gestalt nicht zureichend durch neurobiologische Faktoren, leibliche Sinnesprozesse, unbewusste (bzw. verdrangte) Triebkrafte (Freud, Adler), ein kollektives Unbewusstes (Jung) oder ein Seinsgeschick (Boss) erklart werden kann, sondern auf eine wesentlich schopferisch-geistige Potenz zuruckgeht, die zwar zum Wesen der menschlichen Gesamtperson gehort, ja deren Quell ist, aber durch eine anthropologische Kluft vom empirischen Ich- bzw. Weltbewusstsein getrennt ist. An Hand vieler konkreter Traume wird die ausserordentliche Vielschichtigkeit, Vielseitigkeit und Abgrundigkeit des Traumgeschehens resp. des Unbewussten dargestellt, um erstens eine Revision der gangigen Theorien des Traums und des Unbewussten vorzunehmen, zweitens die menschliche Anthropologie durch eine wesenserhellende Dimension zu erweitern und drittens der therapeutischen Arbeit ein wissenschaftlich-philosophisches Fundament zu geben und einen konstruktiven, hilfreichen Horizont zu eroffnen. Im Fortgang der Studie werden die eigenen Erkenntnisse mit allen bedeutenden Traumtheorien der neueren Zeit konfrontiert und ins kritische Gesprach gebracht. Neurobiologische, leibanthropologische, tiefenpsychologische, hermeneutische und philosophische Diskurse, aber auch die Erfahrungen archaischer Kulturen werden herangezogen, um das Traumphanomen und die vielen Dimensionen des Unbewussten umfassend zu wurdigen. Vor allem die kaum zu uberschatzende Sinntiefe, Abgrundigkeit und schopferische Kraft des Unbewussten sollen deutlich werden und zeigen, dass der Traum der Abkommling einer nur schwer fassbaren, kaum glaublichen und dennoch nicht zu leugnenden Wesenszwiefalt und Wesenstranszendenz des Menschen ist.
