Wahrend es zum Thema Friedhof zahlreiche umfassende wie lokale Publikationen gibt, fehlt eine Studie zum Eingang des Friedhofs. Das Friedhofstor ist aber nicht nur ein marginales Detail, sondern seine Visitenkarte. Es spiegelt uber die Jahrhundert betrachtet nicht nur die Friedhofsgeschichte selbst, sondern die Einstellung der Menschen zu Leben und Tod. In diesem Buch wird der Friedhofseingang erstmals systematisch vom Mittelalter bis zur Neuzeit auf seine kunsthistorische und inhaltliche Aussage befragt. Besonderer Wert wird dabei auf die Ikonographie und die Inschriften gelegt. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem deutschsprachigen Raum, doch gibt es auch einen Blick nach Ubersee, wo sich die europaische Entwicklung in teils monumentalen Formen wiederholt. Eigene Kapitel sind dem judischen und dem islamischen Friedhofseingang gewidmet. Das Buch ist mit 279 farbigen Abbildungen reich illustriert. Ein detailliertes Ortsregister ist angefugt. Der Aufbau folgt der Chronologie der wichtigsten Epochen vom Mittelalter uber Reformationszeit, Aufklarung, Romantik bis zur Gegenwart, und die Eingange spiegeln die geistesgeschichtlich gepragten Vorstellungen vom Tod. Eigene Kapitel sind dem agyptisierenden oder orientalisierenden Friedhofsportal gewidmet und ebenso seiner Rezeption in der Kunst des 19. Jahrhunderts. Auch gibt es Abschnitte zum Memento mori am Friedhofseingang ebenso wie zur Beliebtheit der Engelwesen an diesem bedeutsamen Ort. In der Tendenz lasst sich feststellen, dass die Sprache der Friedhofstore immer inhaltsleerer und unverbindlicher wird. Und somit ist es zugleich ein Gang durch die Religions- und Geistesgeschichte vom Mittelalter bis heute. Das Buch wendet sich an Kunshistoriker, Theologen und alle, die an Friedhofsgeschichte und Bestattungskultur interessiert sind. Gleichzeitig mochte es die Friedhofsverantwortlichen der Gegenwart auf die Bedeutung des Friedhofseingang hinweisen. So ist eine Geschichte des Friedhofseingangs im engeren Sinn ein Beitrag zur Sepulkralkultur, daruber hinaus jedoch ein aussagekraftiger Teil der allgemeinen Kulturgeschichte.
About the Author: Der Theologe und Pfarrer Reiner Sorries, geb. 1952, ist Professor fur Christliche Archaologie und Kunstgeschichte am Fachbereich Theologie der Universitat Erlangen. Von 1992 bis 2015 war er auch Direktor des Museums fur Sepulkralkultur in Kassel. Beide Tatigkeitsfelder pragen seine Forschungsschwerpunkte im Bereich der fruhchristlichen Kunst und der Bestattungs- und Trauerkultur.
