uf einem hellgrünen Riviera-Hügel, zwischen feierlicher Zypresse und lustigem Kirschbaum, der mit halbreifen Früchten betupft war, saßen zwei liebliche junge Mädchen. Es war Verwandtschaft in ihren rosigen Gesichtern und in ihrer geschmackvoll einfachen Kleidung mit dem weißen Matrosenkragen, aus dem dort und hier auf länglichem Halse ein dunkelbraunes Köpfchen wuchs. Die Ältere, auf einem Feldstuhl sitzend und über eine Stickerei gebeugt, war von ganz besonders bestrickender Schönheit. Wenn sie die enzianblauen Augen unter schweren Wimpern langsam aufschlug, ging ein Leuchten über die Umgebung. Alle Dinge wurden in dieser Beleuchtung schöner, alle Menschen gütiger. Es waren große, schüchterne, vielleicht nicht sehr kluge Augen, vom weiten Bogen der bräunlichen Brauen madonnenhaft umrahmt. Das Mädchen war hoch und schlank. Und schön waren auch die Nüstern des feinen Näschens, die bei gedämpftem Lachen mitzulächeln schienen; schön das sanft gerundete Kinn; schön der schmale und doch volle, kirschrote, meist ein wenig geöffnete Mund. Sie glich in ihrer gesunden und natürlichen Jungfräulichkeit den Madonnen Raffaels und mochte Maler und Dichter entzücken. Denn ein Künstler spürte in diesem Mädchen zwar weder Gelehrsamkeit noch gesellschaftliche Gewandtheit, wohl aber das Lebensgeheimnis einer starken und sittsamen Weiblichkeit, gesunde Kinder zu schaffen fähig, keine Bücher. Unfern von den jungen Damen lag eine kannelierte Marmorsäule zwischen zerstreuten Blöcken. Vermutlich hatte man dort bauen wollen; aber der Baumeister hatte sich in die entzückende Landschaft verliebt und das Bauen vergessen. Angesichts des blauen Meeres, zwischen Zypressen und Oliven, hätte sich ein weißer Tempel wirksam ausgenommen, der Sonne geweiht, der Schönheit heilig. Jedoch der Tempel war noch unsichtbar, der Sonnenanbeter desgleichen; und dem Baumeister drohte abermals Gefahr des Verliebens durch diese beiden ungewöhnlich schönen Mädchen. Sie plauderten französisch. Aus ihrem Gespräch ging hervor, daß die Mutter der Älteren ihren Nachmittagsschlaf auszudehnen pflegte, so daß die beiden Schönheiten abseits von der gemieteten Villa auf diesem Aussichtsplatz verweilen konnten. Der jüngere Backfisch lag ausgestreckt im weichen Grase, stützte die braunen Wangen in die Hände und las. Mädchenhüte flimmerten strohgelb aus grünem Rasen. Und es war anmutige Stille um die beiden Gestalten; selbst der Mittagswind spielte nur lässig in Gras und Laub. Von Zeit zu Zeit sprang die Kleine auf, griff in das Blätterwerk empor und suchte sich frühreife Kirschen heraus; oft auch hob sie lachend ihr spitzes Mäulchen an den freundlich herabgeneigten Baum und naschte die Früchte gleich vom Ast weg. Dann hängte sie sich ein Kirschenpaar über jede Ohrmuschel, kaute, spuckte Kerne an die Marmorsäule und las vergnüglich weiter.
