About the Book

English summary: The myth of the Hittite vegetation deity Telipini has fundamental parallels in numerous cultures: That the disappearance of an agricultural deity brings about a time of need and therefore energetic efforts are taken to bring him back. This tale is similar, for example, to the Summerian tale where the god Dumuzi is associated with the production of milk, and therefore, with abundance and whose disappearances are accompanied by various lamentations in Sumerian literature. In Hittite mythology, the god Telipinu becomes angry, for no explicitly stated reason, and then he disappears, which results in a reversal of the ordered nature of the world: The house is pervaded by the thick smoke of an open hearth, so that the household gods on the altar, the sheep in their pens, and the cattle in their stalls are all threatened with asphyxiation. Consequently, all of the gods commit themselves to searching for him, but no one is able to find him until a bee is sent out, which finds the missing god sleeping in a forest meadow and rouses him by stinging his hands and feet. This solution, that after the failure of the strongest beings the most inconspicuous creature is able to complete a difficult task, has parallels in various cultures from the Sumerians to the Greek fairy tales and German folk tales. This work presents this important text of cultural history in transcription and translations with extensive commentary.
