In "Theodor der Jäger" erzählt Rudolf de Haas die Jagdabenteuer des eben in Deutsch Ostafrika angekommenen Theodor. Doch dann bricht der 1. Weltkrieg aus. Theodor und Konrad melden sich bei den Reitern, wo Theodor trotz seines jungen Alters aufgenommen wird, als Konrad sich persönlich bei dem ihm aus China bekannten Major einsetzt. Eine unsägliche Hitze, Durst, Strapazen und Entbehrungen aller Art gehören nun zum Alltag. Im Feldzug geht es jetzt gegen Britisch Ostafrika, um dort die Bahnlinie zu sprengen. Allmählich jedoch wird die Übermacht der Truppen aus dem Britischen Weltreich immer größer und die deutsche Schutztruppe wird zurückgedrängt.
Ein packender Roman mit lebhaften Schilderungen, die die untergegangene Welt Deutsch Ostafrikas wieder zum Leben erwecken.
Rudolf de HaasRudolf de Haas wurde 1870 im Rheinland geboren. Er war evangelischer Pfarrer - unter anderem in einer deutschen evangelischen Gemeinde in Australien und später als Divisionspfarrer zwei Jahre in China - und ein erfolgreicher Schriftsteller. Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts lebte er in Australien. Seine dortigen Erlebnisse beschrieb er in "Der Nugget. Erzählungen aus dem australischen Goldgräberleben", "Um das Gold der Südsee - Eine Erzählung aus Australiens rauhen Tagen" und "Fata Morgana. Erlebnisse im australischen Busch".

1909 heiratete er Thea Gnade und unternahm eine lange Hochzeitsreise nach Afrika durch Tunesien, in die Wüste und in die Oasen. Nach dieser Reise entstand das Buch "An Lagerfeuern der Sahara" mit vielen interessanten Fotografien. Nach der Reise bekam er 1912 eine Pfarrstelle in Nazza in Thüringen.

Da Rudolf de Haas auch Mitglied des Deutschen Flottenvereins und der Deutschen Kolonialgesellschaft war, wurde er 1914 für etwa ein halbes Jahr auf eine zweite Reise nach Deutsch-Ostafrika geschickt, um als bekannt guter Redner in den Kolonien für den Deutschen Flottenverein zu werben. Er nahm seine Frau und Theodor Klinkhardt mit, einen intelligenten jungen Mann aus Nazza, den er konfirmiert hatte und über den er in seinen Büchern "Theodor der Jäger" und "Der jüngste Reiter" schrieb. Er selbst erscheint in mehreren Büchern unter dem Pseudonym "Konrad".

Im Zuge des Ausbruchs des Ersten Weltkrieges wurde die Reise zu einem mehrjährigen Aufenthalt. Rudolf de Haas und Theodor - der der jüngste Reiter der Schutztruppe wurde - wurden eingezogen und machten den Krieg mit, bis sie zwei Jahre vor Kriegsende in Gefangenschaft gerieten und in das große Gefangenenlager nach Maadi bei Kairo kamen. Hier lernte er einen Polizeiwachtmeister Hans Moll aus Mpapua in Deutsch Ostafrika kennen, der unter dem Namen Polizeiwachtmeister Molinäus in dem packenden Kriminalroman "Der Wilderer von Deutsch-Ost" eine der Hauptfiguren ist. Der Roman selbst beruht in großen Teilen auf den Erfahrungen von Hans Moll.

Seine Erfahrungen aus dieser Zeit beschrieb er in mehreren Werken, nämlich "Der Wilderer von Deutsch-Ost", "Das Opfer der Wagogo", "Der Löwe von Mosambik", "Im Sattel für Deutsch-Ost", "Die Meuterer", "Askaritreue", "Der Elefantenjäger van der Merwe", "Der Pflanzer im Kalundatal" und "Im Hochlande der Riesenkrater".
