Derriere celle-ci, unjeune Amour, penche galamment a son oreille, avait l'air de lui chuchoterquelque mystere. La grace exquise des formes, le geste vif et empresse du petitchuchoteur, l'aimable tournure des nymphes, et meme le singulier eclat descouleurs que dix-sept siecles au moins avaient respecte, attiraient les yeux detous les connaisseurs. Naturellement l'imagination italienne se mit bientot enquete de trouver une explication et un historique a cet incomparable morceau.Chaque jour donnait naissance a quelque nouvelle interpretation, mais lecaractere essentiel de la probabilite manquait a toutes egalement.Cependant l'histoire de la fresque mysterieuse n'etait pas destinee a etre unsecret eternel. Dans les premiers mois de l'annee 1836, un de ces papyrus, quisont maintenant soumis a un excellent procede de deroulement invente par lechevalier Collini de Naples, fut ouvert, et laissa voir aux yeux surpris lafresque - en miniature - en tete de la premiere partie du manuscrit. Le papyrus,deroule en entier, contenait la presente histoire, sur laquelle avait eteincontestablement fait le dessin dont elle etait illustree, histoire que nousdonnons avec toutes les mutilations que la fragile matiere du rouleau a moitiecalcinee rendait inevitables.
