"Der hellenistische Hesiod" ist die erste Monographie, die sich der detaillierten literarischen Erklarung eines bisher vernachlassigten Klassikers, des Dichters Arat aus Soloi (3. Jh. v. Chr.), widmet. Detailliert geht die Arbeit der Frage nach, wie sich der beruhmte Lehrdichter mit seinem Gattungsvorganger Hesiod auseinandersetzt und deckt dabei ein komplexes, aus zahlreichen intertextuellen Bezugen bestehendes Nachahmungsprogramm auf. In den einzelnen Kapiteln wird zum einen untersucht, wie Arat den Zeushymnus und den Weltalterhymnus der Erga rezipiert, zum anderen, wie sich die Hesiod-Nachahmung in der Struktur, der Gesprachssituation und der religiosen Farbung der Phainomena niederschlagt. Neben verschiedenen Hesiod-Passagen, wie z. B. dem Epilog der Erga oder der Geburtslegende des Zeus in der Theogonie, kommt dabei ein breites Spektrum typischer Gattungsmerkmale zur Sprache: vom Wahrheitsanspruch bis zu den exkursartigen Erzahlungen und von der assoziationsahnlichen Kompositionsweise bis zum Motiv der Hinwendung an Bauern und Seefahrer. Diese gattungstypologische Betrachtungsweise geht mit einer standigen Berucksichtigung des politischen, philosophischen und literarischen Kontexts der Phainomena einher und zeigt dem Leser die Dialektik von Tradition und Neuerung im Arateischen Lehrepos auf. Durch eine textimmanente und zugleich literaturtheoretisch fundierte Untersuchung gelangt der Autor so zu einer neuen Gesamtwurdigung Arats, die fur die hellenistische Poesie und Poetik, die Geschichte der Hesiod-Rezeption und der Gattung Lehrgedicht, aber auch fur die antike Praxis der literarischen imitatio im allgemeinen wichtige Aufschlusse gibt.
