Um Faschismus und Krieg fur immer von deutschem Boden fernzuhalten, unternahmen die fuhrenden Personlichkeiten in der SBZ/DDR von Anfang an vieles, um an die verschutteten Traditionen des humanistischen kulturellen Erbes der Vergangenheit anzuknupfen. Ein Konsens, der die russischen Kulturoffiziere ebenso umfasste wie Parteipolitiker der SED und die philosophische Elite. 1949 stand im Zeichen Johann Wolfgang Goethes. Neben dem im Westen als Skandal empfundenen Auftritt Thomas Manns in Weimar kam es zu zahlreichen Veranstaltungen und Wortmeldungen zu Goethe: Johannes R. Becher, Paul Rilla, Georg Lukacs, Wolfgang Harich, Ernst Bloch, Hans Mayer - das sind die Protagonisten des vorliegenden Buches, deren Goethe-Verstandnis nachgezeichnet wird. Dabei werden zuerst die Jahre zwischen 1949 und 1956 fokussiert. Nach den Umbruchen in der DDR arbeiten aber gerade die marxistischen Philosophen Lukacs, Bloch und Harich weiter zum kulturellen Erbe. Ein Prozess, der zum Abschluss untersucht und dargestellt wird. Zudem bietet der Band verschiedene Seitenblicke: Auf Schiller und Heine oder die Geschichte der Krisenzeit von 1956. Eine Reise durch die DDR - anhand von Goethe, mit Goethe, auf der Suche nach der Identitat des kleineren deutschen Staates.
