Robert Walsers zweiter Roman Robert Walsers zweiter Roman Der Gehulfe wurde 1908 vom Verlag Bruno Cassirer in Berlin verlegt, in dem 1907 bereits Geschwister Tanner erschienen war. Die Kritische Robert Walser-Edition (KWA) dokumentiert erstmals den Textstand des Erstdrucks des Romans, uber den Christian Morgenstern, der Lektor des Verlags, urteilt: 'Walser gefallt mir ausgezeichnet. [...] Es ist etwas breit gewebt, aber die Muster verbluffen immer wieder durch ihre Feinheit. Eine erstaunliche Zucht und Reife erhebt es kunstlerisch weit uber die Vorganger.' Die Entstehungs- und Textgeschichte des Romans gibt dabei einige Ratsel auf. Morgenstern lag noch vor dem Erscheinen von Geschwister Tanner, im November 1906, ein neues Manuskript Walsers vor, das in der uberlieferten Korrespondenz mit 'Gehulfe' betitelt wird, sich aber inhaltlich wesentlich vom vorliegenden Roman unterschieden haben muss. Offenbar wurden also binnen eines Jahres zwei Manuskripte fertiggestellt, wovon aber nur eines zum Druck gelangte. Im Nachwort der KWA wird diese nur luckenhaft zu rekonstruierende Entstehungsgeschichte Des Gehulfen und die dazu erhaltenen Dokumente in Auszugen wiedergegeben. Ein Abriss der fruhen Rezeption gibt einen Einblick in die teilweise kontroversen Besprechungen und das breite Echo der Kritik zu Robert Walsers zweitem publizierten Roman. Im philologischen Apparat der Edition wird die Textdifferenz der Buchausgabe gegenuber der Handschrift (KWA IV 2) dargestellt. Die in KWA IV.2 faksimilierte und diplomatisch transkribierte Handschrift ist das einzige erhaltene Romanmanuskript neben demjenigen zu Geschwister Tanner. Die Entstehung des Romans scheint problemlos und rasch vonstatten gegangen zu sein, wie durch Selbstaussagen Walsers gegenuber Carl Seelig und in einem spateren Prosastuck nahegelegt wird, worin dem Erzahler 'in recht kurzer Zeit ein Roman aus der Feder hervorspross'. Im Vergleich zum ersten Roman weist das Manuskript auch ungleich weniger Bearbeitungsspuren auf. Der gleichmassige und saubere Schriftduktus lassen den Eindruck einer Abschrift entstehen. An den Faksimiles nachvollziehbare handschriftliche Phanomene legen jedoch nahe, dass es sich auch hier um eine Erstniederschrift handelt, die Walser vermutlich in der zweiten Jahreshalfte 1907 angefertigt hat. Auf der beigelegten CD-ROM befindet sich die elektronische Version aller bisher in der KWA edierten Bande, mit Dokumenten und den farbigen Handschriftenfaksimiles. Ausserdem enthalt die CD-ROM die fortlaufend aktualisierte Version des Findbuchs, mit dem samtliche Texte Robert Walsers nach den Archivstandorten, Erstdruckorten und den Abdrucken in den wichtigsten spateren Textausgaben identifiziert werden konnen.
