Oder vielleicht ist man frei, wenn man überall hinreisen kann? Ist man auch im Gefängnis frei? Wenn man nach Jean-Paul Sartre, einem existentialistischen Philosophen des 20. Jahrhunderts geht, ist man auch im Gefängnis frei. Denn man hat auch in größter Knechtschaft die Autonomie frei zu wählen und sich sein Urteil zu bilden. In Sartres Philosophie spielt der Freiheitsbegriff eine große Rolle. Nicht nur in seiner Philosophie ist der Gedanke der Freiheit zentral, sondern auch in seinem Liebesleben. Er hat einen Liebespakt mit Simone de Beauvoir geschlossen, der heute als Skandal gilt. Sartre stellt sich gegen Traditionen und vertritt die Ansicht, dass man seine Freiheit nutzen sollte. Viele Menschen leiden unter den Zwängen der Gesellschaft. Unter den verurteilenden Blicken darunter, dass einem dadurch die Freiheit genommen wird. Man besucht den Gottesdienst, da man nicht möchte, dass Andere schlecht über einen reden. Man verlässt seinen Ehepartner nicht, damit man nicht von den Nachbarn verurteilt wird. Wenn man nach Sartre geht, sollte man machen, was man will. Man sollte sich scheiden lassen, wenn man nicht mehr mit der Ehe zufrieden ist. Man sollte aus der Kirche austreten, wenn man nicht gläubig ist. Man sollte sich von den Ketten lösen, die man sich selbst anlegt. Das klingt idealistisch und auch absurd, jedoch hat Sartres Philosophie auch ihre Kehrseite. Denn bei all der Freiheit, die man hat, darf man die große Verantwortung nicht vergessen. Man hat die Freiheit sich gegen Ungerechtigkeit aufzulehnen, wenn man sich nicht gegen diese wehrt und sie zulässt, ist man für sein Handeln verantwortlich. Man kann sich seiner Freiheit nicht
