Neue Methoden und Produkte zu entwickeln und zu verbreiten, ist ein elementarer Bestandteil leistungsfähiger Unternehmen neben dem Vertrieb und der Betreuung bestehender Güter und Verfahrensweisen. Aber die Genese von und der Umgang mit Innovationen gestaltet sich unter den Konditionen von globalem Wettbewerb und wachsenden finanziellen Kosten immer schwieriger. Mangelnde Innovationsfähigkeit lässt Firmen in Zeiten einer dynamischeren Produktentwicklung und einer Verschärfung auf dem globalen Markt straucheln. Schon wird von einer Krise der Innovationen gesprochen. Diese wird verstärkt durch die Wirtschaftskrise. Im Zuge dieser ist die Beschaffung neuer Kredite für die Unternehmen zunehmend schwieriger. Damit fehlen wichtige Investitionen um Innovationsprozesse anzustoßen und fortzuführen. Die daraus resultierenden Turbulenzen emergieren deutlich die bereits zuvor konstatierten Schwächen des deutschen Produktionsmodells. Da demnach nicht nur die Bedingungen für Innovationen sich wandeln, sondern auch die Finanzierung ungewiss ist, eignen sich die traditionellen Koordinationsmechanismen wie Markt und Hierarchie immer weniger um Innovationen zu generieren. Daher zeigen neue Entwicklungen einen Trend, in dem Firmen in zwischen- und überbetrieblichen Strukturen Innovationen gestalten und umsetzen. Diese Art der Kooperation unterscheidet sich von den traditionellen Austauschmustern über den Markt und die Hierarchie. Es ist der Zusammenschluss heterogener Akteure zu einem Innovationsnetzwerk.
