Die vorliegende Arbeit sollte ursprünglich sämtliche Dramen von "heinrich IV. 2. Teil (1598) bis zum Ende von Shake speares Schaifen um1assen und die Erganzung zu Borchers "der Charakterkohstrast in den Dramen Shakespeares bis 'heinrich IV.' 1. Teil bilden.l) Indem sie zunächst aus rein äu�erlid1en Gründen wegen der gro�en Zahl der rest bleibenden Stücke au1 die Tragödien eingeschränkt wurde, Komödien und Historien also ausgeschieden wurden, ergab sich gleichzeitig der Vorteil, Shs. Entwicklungsgang in der Konirasttedmik au1 einem einheitlichen Gebiet, dazu auf der Höhe seiner Kunst und in seinen rei1sten Schöpiungen dar stellen zu können. Die verschiedenen Zwecke, die Tragödie, Komödie und Historie naturgemä� verfolgen, bedingen aud1 verschiedene Anwendung der einem Dramatiker für seine Figuren zu Gebote stehenden Charakterisierungsmittei, und es wäre deshalb von vornherein mit einem vielfachen Unterbred1en und Aendern des einmal eingeschlagenen Weges schon nur aus stoiflid1en Rücksichten und daraus ev. Folgender Umber sid1111

Ah Vorarbeiten kam für mich au�er Borchers nur Johann peter "handlungs Charakter und Situationskontrast in den Jugendwerken von Charles Dickens inbetracht. Er bringt wertvolle Au'siuhrungen über das Kontrastgeiiihl. Lüdemanns "shakespeares Verwendung von gleichartigem und gegensätz hohem Parallelismus war weniger heranzuziehen, 'da er wiederholt Kontrast und blo�en Gegensatz nicht womit unsere Arbeit steht und fällt. Vor allem aber war Bord1ers zu benutzen. Dank seinen Untersuchungen war ich imstande, mit einem 1esten Begri11 des Charakterkontrasts an die Tragödien heranzutrelen, so da� ich einer bedeutend leichteren Aufgabe gegenüberstand als er: Es galt nicht mehr 1ür mid1, die ersten Grundlinien fur diesen Begri11 zu finden, sondern ich hatte den bereits gefundenen in den einzelnen Tragödien au1zusuchen, cv. Abweichungen festzustellen und Borchers Resultat dann entweder zu bestätigen, oder es fiir die Tragödien meinen Untersuchungen gemä� zmändern. Borchers p. 1411. Verlangt fiir die beiden Figuren, die im Charakterkontrast einander gegeniibergestellt werden, gleid1e Voraussetzungen und Bedingungen. Es sollen Figuren mit annähernder Gleichheit im Alter, gleichen Geschlechts, in der gleichen sozialen Stellung und gleichen Volk3d1arakters sein, und sie miissen einem und demselben äu�eren Elemente, Begri11e gegeniiber Charaktergegensätze zeigen. Diese De1i niti0n bildete für mich also die Grundlage. Ah die Darstellung jedes einzelnen Kontrasts schlo� sich dann naturgemä� die Frage: Was davon gehört Sh. Selbst an, und was hat er aus seinen Quellen übernehmen können? Daraus mu�te Sich schlie�lich ein Au1sd11u� über shs.arbeitsweise und über sein Verhältnis zu seinen Vorgängern ergeben.
