Bevor der Afghanistan-Konflikt genauer und detailliert analysiert wird, ist es zunächst von Bedeutung, seine historische Entwicklung zu beschreiben. Der Konflikt in Afghanistan begann 1978 mit einem militärischen Putsch der kommunistischen demokratischen Volkspartei, welche folglich die Macht in der erst seit 1973 bestehenden Republik übernahm. Unterstützt bei der Entwicklung zu einem modernen sozialistischen Staat wurde sie dabei von der Sowjetunion. 1979 wurde der Regierungschef Taraki von einem Gegner (Amin) aus der eigenen Partei erschossen, woraufhin die Sowjetunion bewaffnet in Afghanistan einmarschierte und eine militärische Bedrohung darstellte. Sie führte den Kommunismus ein und Karmal wird neuer Regierungschef. Widerstandsgruppen der Mudschaheddin wurden im Kampf gegen die neue Regierung von den USA und Saudi-Arabien mit Waffen unterstützt, die der ISI (pakistanischer Geheimdienst) an radikalislamische Parteien leitete. Der Krieg dauerte zehn Jahre, verwüstete das Land und brachte viele Opfer und Flüchtlinge. Als Michael Gorbatschow neuer Führer der UdSSR wurde und die wachsende Unbeliebtheit der Sowjetunion und die hohen Kosten erkannte, beschloss er deren Rückzug. Im Februar 1989 zogen die sowjetischen Truppen ab.
