La depresión afecta las actividades diarias de quien la padezca, pues esta enfermedad se distingue por presentar una sensación de no servir para nada, de tristeza, de autoculpa, desánimo, ausencia de esperanza, alteraciones del sueño, alteraciones en el comer, abandono de sí mismo, y por supuesto problemas en el rendimiento académico, entre otros. Lamentablemente es una realidad indeseable, que no se puede negar, es uno de los trastornos psicológicos mas asistidos por la población mundial. Ya la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) en septiembre de 2001, la ha llamado la epidemia del siglo, pues en el 2010 alrededor de 25 a 35 millones de personas presentaron depresión en América. De los cuales sólo un 15 por ciento son diagnosticados y reciben un tratamiento adecuado. Por su parte Dr. Dean Jamison, profesor de Salud Pública en la Universidad de California, en Los Ángeles y su equipo de colaboradores contratados por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), realizaron un estudio prospectivos y estimaron que para el año 2020, la depresión será uno de los mayores problemas de salud pública, convirtiéndose en la segunda causa de incapacidad en el mundo. En México el Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (INEGI): dieron a conocer las estadísticas de suicidios en la población de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos 2009, de 5,190 personas, se suicidaron, de los que 4201 eran varones y 989 mujeres. La mayoría prefirió el mes de mayo, la minoría, febrero. Del total de estas personas que se quitaron la vida, 2,197 fueron solteros y 1,978 casados. Y menciona además que los Adolescentes y jóvenes entre 15 y 24 años, ocupan el primer lugar en sectores vulnerables, en segundo lugar se ubican personas adultas y en tercero adultos mayores, sin embargo se ha detectado un incremento en niños menores de 10 años. En el ámbito universitario hablando de depresión, en un estudio realizado, en la Universidad Veracruzana se encontró en Psicología un 7.4% de depresión en los hombres mientras que en las mujeres fue un 9.1%, no siendo significativa la diferencia, en Enfermería quienes presentaron mayor porcentaje de depresión fueron los hombres con un 11.1%, y las mujeres se encontró solo un 3.6%. (Barradas y cols., 2013. Pag.135). El propósito de este libro, es orientar al público en general, especialmente a maestros y quienes de alguna manera están en contacto con adolescente y jóvenes universitarios, a conocer lo determinante que es, que los profesores que dan clases en diferentes niveles educativos, que conozca, que es la depresión, sus causas, síntomas, consecuencias en el rendimiento académico y sobre todo las alternativas para detectarla en el aula y prevenir mayor afectación en los estudiantes. Lo importante que es, estar consciente que podemos ser facilitadores de una mejor calidad de vida para quienes nos rodean, ya que un diagnostico oportuno con su respectivo tratamiento eficaz, la depresión se supera. Todos podemos poner un granito de arena para construir una mejor sociedad.
