Riprendo la penna per narrare e celebrare novelle glorie italiane. Mi esulta l' animo di allegrezza in adem pire sifi'atto patrio ufficio, cui ho sacrato i miei più ar denti pensieri, tanto nobile ed elegante per chi si cono sca del suo pregio non comparabile a quello di qualsi voglia onoranza e ricchezza. Col vigor della mente vo discorrendo questa diletta Penisola, e dopo un subito ed alto destarsi di maraviglia da tutte parti di essa ecco sorgere lìetissima consonanza di plauso perchè gl' in genui e buoni non sono spenti, all' udir delle cose che sono per favellare. Furono detti belli e felici quei giorni d' Italia, nei quali i Cesari, gli Scipioni ed altrettali me navano trionfo dispiegando davanti all' ebbro popolo la Splendida pom pa delle prede e codazzo dei re catenati: ma quel popolo nel suo matto tripudio non udiva il sof focato afi'annarsi di tante orbe madri e vedovate spose cui quella pompa costava le più care loro viscere; non vedeva le terre disertate dagli scempi e mine di que'suoi feroci idoli, che capitanando voraci orde sobbissavano il mondo; non lo feriva il lamento di tanti trucidati uomini, che quantunque suoi fratelli aveva purancbe la oltraco tanza di appelhr barbari. Ma io salutai sempre per bellie felici soltanto quei giorni d' Italia, in cui il Galile (dirò solo di questo suo maggior figlio) interrogava ritrosa natura, e, quasi un Nume la sforzasse, la strix geva a rivelare i suoi stupendi segreti. Donde il mansac farsi degli animi l' avviarsi delle umane generazioni vera civiltà il crescersi delle intellettuali dilizie 1' al mentarsi dei piaceri ed agi fisici, l' attingere insomm quella felicità che è dato saporare quaggiù. Volgia attorno lo sguardo dispogliati di quel prestigio che ne parer sempre migliori i passati dei presenti secoli, e saggio discernimento paragoniamo il nostro viver ciw all'antiquo; nè già ad un remotissimo; ma si a que unicamente che precede il secolo del Galileo. Ed ob qu ne si apre lagrimabile scena! Nè profana nè sacra c4 secura dalla contaminazione del divizioso e potente. D zelle, spose, orfani, vedove, che più? Vergini del gnore, tutti artigliati da nefarie branche rapinanti; era delitto anco il pianto e il sospiro; e la sommessa qu rela non di rado tronca da laccio, pugnale o veleno. Qu mai di tali nefandezze ed orrori vede il sole che illumiu le nostre fronti? Certo che niuno. Sia dunque eten laude a quei prodi, che col superiore loro intendimen ci dischiusero i fonti della sapienza, e che colle mirab loro invenzioni segnarono alcuni secoli di un carattc incancellabile, e gli renderono i soli degni di figura negli umani fasti (notati altronde di tante laidezze) a gl ria appunto della umana progenie.
