Los conceptos de arte y cultura han cambiado al son de las cosmovisiones dominantes de la época. Aquí volvemos a los conceptos antiguos, arte es técnica, y cultura no es lo contrario de natura. Las artes liberales eran la gramática, retórica, dialéctica, aritmética, geometría, astronomía y música; y desde antes de ellas, la medicina y arquitectura, como muchas otras disciplinas, eran artes. La actividad artística es, desde Aristóteles, una imitación de la Naturaleza, y teniendo por resultado las obras arquitectónicas, tecnológicas, teatrales, literarias, musicales..., es decir, culturales, entendemos por qué Filón de Alejandría decía de las artes que coinciden con la existencia humana pareciendo ser de la misma edad, pues al ser humano le es imposible vivir sin ellas.
Clifford Geertz decía que la cultura, lejos de complementar a un animal ya formado, fue base constitutiva de su desarrollo neurológico. La cultura ha creado un entorno al que nos hemos tenido que adaptar biológicamente. La cultura occidental, siempre dividiendo todo en dualismos extremistas, nos acostumbró a llamar artificial a una cosa y natural a la otra. Antes era fácil pensarlo así, pero ahora vivimos en un mundo donde nuestra comida es artificial, nuestra casa, nuestra ropa, a veces incluso partes de nuestro cuerpo, al punto que hay que pensar si acaso nosotros no lo somos también, o si no lo habremos sido, al menos, desde que nos podamos llamar humanos.
En este libro se recorren las perspectivas sobre el arte hasta la Edad Media: Platón, Aristóteles, Felix Capella, Cassiodorus Senator, las investigaciones psicológicas actuales sobre la creatividad; y las perspectivas de la cultura, desde la antropología, el psicoanálisis y la etología, pues ya es necedad no reconocer a los animales que tienen conductas culturales.
Y partiendo del planteamiento de Geertz sobre la cultura como un programa, se inicia un nuevo método antropológico que trata de describir los sintagmas de la cultura y la manera en que se generan y actúan como procesos perceptivos. La cultura se transmite principalmente a través del lenguaje, es entonces el lenguaje su causa material. Y si se logran debido a la retórica, como decían Clifford Geertz y Carlo Michelstaedter, ¿serán quizás las cosmovisiones, obras de arte? A través de una observación participante y la historia de las religiones, el autor concluye que la gente no cree en su religión por sus argumentos, sino por la manera en que ella nos hace sentir, igual que una pintura nos roba la mirada y una canción el corazón. De manera que al final, tal como es gracias a la percepción, la realidad está compuesta como una obra de arte.
