About the Book

The setting of the story is Texas in the late 1800's. It takes place during the Civil War and the era after. A group of men that were close friends ride off to join the Texas Brigade under General John Bell Hood. They gained even a closer bond doing the war. It would have looked as though the men followed the man who was made a Major, but in reality the men, including the major, followed a man called Jake Evans. Many regarded Jake as a god of the plains. Jake had taken a young man, Red Janson, as a partner and impressed upon him a high moral code that showed a high sense of loyalty. Red later picked up a boy, Jericho Johnson, who might have ended up on the wrong side of the law and taught him the same high code of honor. Then two boys, Louis Calvin and Johnny Meyers, definitely heading for a life of lawlessness were picked up by Jericho whose association changed their lives. Following the story, Jake, a widower, is killed in an accident leaving a young son to be raised by the Major and is wife. The major has a daughter a couple of years younger than Jake's son, Matt. Raised as almost brother and sister, the two found that they loved each other in a different manner then brother and sister. When the major realized it, he changed in his treatment of young Matt who was looked upon as a member of the family. He was thought of as a boss along with Red who was the foreman. He was liked and respected by all the men. Though the Major raised Matt the men all looked at Matt as a son. He had the same qualities about him as his dad, Jake. Now he was in the bunk house like a regular hand, the Major hoping this would end the closeness of Cindy and Matt. The Major's reaction to this knowledge puts into motion events that no one could predict. The story takes you through gunfights, friendships, love and searches through rugged terrain with many obstacles. It also explores the deep feelings felt at the loss of ones who can never be replaced. Travel with these men through dangers and heartaches to find Matt and in doing so, find there is more to life than the ranch. Their encounters are not only with Indians and killers, but with some lovely women as well. All this shows that love can blossom in adversities and touch "Deep in the Hearts of Texans."
