DECEPTIONS is a romantic suspense novel about a lady who defends herself and her child from her mentally ill ex-husband's revenge as she tries to hold onto the love of her life.
Sierra Johansson struggles to make her dysfunctional marriage to Connor work despite his cheating and his reneging on a promise to start a family. When she realizes she's at a breaking point, she takes control of her life and secretly gets pregnant via artificial insemination using Byron's, a married long-term friend, sperm. She and her best friend shows up at her husband's mistress' place while the lovers are in the middle of the act, and she snaps. Moments later the mistress' husband enters the bedroom. Sierra comes to her senses, and she and her friend escapes. Not long after that Sierra divorces her husband.
Distrust of men and single-parenting responsibilities challenge Sierra for a couple of lonely years. That's until she runs into Byron, who she hasn't seen since she told him she had conceived. She finds out he's been depressed due to the death of his wife in a car accident not long after he donated his sperm. After much hesitation, Sierra agrees to let Byron meet her son, Aubrey, and then finally comes to terms with her fears regarding Byron interfering with her parenting of him. Connor sees Sierra and Byron together and realizes the unmistakable similarities in Byron and Aubrey. It triggers his Narcissistic Personality Disorder and he goes into a rage. He accuses Sierra of having an affair with Byron during their marriage. He then embarks upon a terrifying path of revenge that includes breaking and entry, threatening to run over her dog, chasing her through the woods with a gun, and kidnapping her son.
Sierra uses her defense training to tackle Connor to the floor when he breaks into her home. After knocking him out cold and hog tying his wrists and ankles, she's about to descend the stairs of her home when she looks down and into Byron's wild, but caring, eyes. Byron also shows up to protect Sierra when she's hiding from Connor in the woods. He leaves Connor hanging from a tree in an animal net.
Near the end of the book Connor snatches Sierra's son from her arms. Sierra and Byron chase Connor to the regional airport, but they arrive too late. Stunned, they watch as Connor's plane ascends into the sky, taking their son with him. Because of Connor's influence with the law, Sierra and Byron take the law into their own hands to get their child back and to get rid of Connor. After a harrowing night's ordeal, they rescue Aubrey from Connor's private Caribbean Island and sends Connor out to sea in an unplugged canoe.
When Sierra finally gets intimate with Byron, she experiences the best intimacy of her life. But afterwards she discovers his male anatomy was tragically traumatized during the car accident that took his wife's life. After their tearful discussion about this sensitive subject, Byron proposes marriage to her. What will she say?
