Pompeia, 79 d.C. Glaucus, nobre ateniense, chega à movimentada e berrante cidade romana e rapidamente se apaixona pelo belo grego Ione. O ex-guardião de Ione, o malévolo feiticeiro egípcio Arbaces, tem projetos em Ione e se propõe a destruir sua felicidade. Arbaces já arruinou o irmão sensível de Ione, Apaecides, atraindo-o a se juntar ao sacerdócio vice-montado de Ísis. A escrava cega Nydia é resgatada de seus donos abusivos, Burbo e Stratonice, por Glaucus, para quem ela secretamente anseia. Arbaces horroriza Ione, declarando seu amor por ela, e ficando furioso quando ela o recusa. Glaucus e Apaecides a resgatam de suas garras, mas Arbaces é atingido por um terremoto, um sinal da erupção do Vesúvio. Glauco e Ione exultam em seu amor, para o tormento de Nydia, enquanto Apaecides encontra uma nova religião no cristianismo. Nydia involuntariamente ajuda Julia, uma jovem rica que tem olhos para Glaucus, a obter uma poção do amor de Arbaces para conquistar o amor de Glaucus. Glauco resgata Ione da casa de Arbaces, mas nas ruas caóticas eles encontram Arbaces, que tenta agarrar Ione, mas é morto por um raio. Nydia leva Glauco e Ione à segurança em um navio na Baía de Nápoles (por causa de sua cegueira, ela costumava andar na escuridão total, enquanto as pessoas que viam eram desamparadas na nuvem de poeira vulcânica). Na manhã seguinte, ela comete suicídio deslizando silenciosamente no mar; a morte é preferível à agonia de seu amor não correspondido por Glauco. Dez anos se passaram e Glaucus escreve a Sallust, agora morando em Roma, sobre a felicidade dele e de Ione em Atenas. Eles construíram uma tumba para Nydia e adotaram o cristianismo.
