About the Book

This seventh book in the Series is the story of two men of the sea - a merchant seaman and a Navy Reservist.

George Leslie Anderson became an Australian merchant seaman during the World War. II In June 1942 he was on board when the SS Iron Chieftain was sunk. The SS Iron Chieftain was the first merchant vessel sunk by Japanese submarines off the south-east coast of Australia in World War II. She was sunk by the Japanese submarine I-24 in company with I-21. After the sinking, George Anderson was aboard the lifeboat when the Second Officer ordered 'get the oars out' and they rowed to shore. The fate of George Anderson and his crew mates is a tale of loss, luck, endurance and leadership and is indicative of the experience of many who served in Australia's Merchant Navy in World War II. George Anderson served for the remainder of the War as a merchant seaman.

Arthur Alan 'Dukesy' Forbes served as a Navy Reservist in World War II, which included ten months aboard the anti-submarine corvette, HMAS Mildura. In the very early morning of 8 February 1943, off Bermagui, NSW, I-21 torpedoed the SS Iron Knight in full view of HMAS Mildura. The SS Iron Knight sank in 2 minutes. The loss of thirty-six merchant seamen from the SS Iron Knight was, at that time, the second greatest loss of merchant seamen off the east coast of Australia after the sinking of the SS Iron Crown. The story of the encounter between I-21, HMAS Mildura and SS Iron Knight is indicative of the wider anti-submarine campaign off Australia's east coast in 1942-43. Dukesy Forbes served until the end of the War.

The story of their operational experience provides the essence of the Convoy War that took place off the south-east coast of Australia in 1942-43. This book also tells the story of the divergent treatment of Navy personnel and merchant seamen as a result of their service in this Convoy War.

The Foreword for this book has been written by Allan's Duntroon classmate, Murray Lott, who grew up in Newcastle where his father worked for BHP. After a lengthy career in the Regular Army, Murray retired to Sydney and now spends many days boating and fishing on Sydney Harbour.
