El tirano surge como un líder reivindicador de las inquietudes políticas de las mayorías hasta convertirse en el opresor de estas. En la tiranía encontramos que el libertinaje, la ambición, la filtración insistente del miedo colectivo y la soberbia autócrata son causas de todos sus males, contraponiéndole la prudencia, vista, en cambio, como el origen de todos los bienes. La tiranía será la peor de las desviaciones constitucionales. El régimen tiránico es el que más se aleja de un gobierno constitucional o representativo. El poder del tirano no se establece por su virtud, sino que se distingue por el uso de la fuerza y el fraude, la arbitrariedad personal en la distribución despótica de los cargos públicos entre sus acólitos o serviles. La palabra Tyrannos (en griego), significa usurpador, un usurpador que tendrá la fuerza y popularidad suficiente para mandar de forma absoluta y por encima de las leyes. La mención del tirano en la Antígona (506-7) de Sófocles advertía que no sólo los dioses sino también los hombres envidian a los tiranos. ¿Por qué la figura del tirano ha sido tan carismática y, a la vez, rechazada en la historia?
