Qui offerto nella prima edizione moderna, governata da criteri filologici, il De re anatomica e senz'altro uno dei piu importanti testi medici prodotti da maestri patavini tra il Cinque e il Seicento.Successore del Vesalio sulla cattedra di Anatomia dello Studium di Padova (1544) e professore poi in quello di Pisa, Realdo Colombo (Cremona, 1510-15 ca. - Roma, 1559) si trasferisce sin dal 1548 a Roma nell'intento di dar vita a un trattato che ambisse non tanto a competere con Galeno, o piuttosto ad affossarlo definitivamente, quanto a superare e vincere - con l'ausilio, per le progettate tabulAe, del cola vivente primo pittor del mondo: Michelangelo - il monumentale capolavoro dello stesso Vesalio, il De humani corporis fabrica. Nacque cosi il De re anatomica, che vide la luce nell'estate del 1559 a Venezia, presso Nicolo Bevilacqua, nella stagione medesima in cui il suo autore incontrava la morte. Lo stile chiaro e semplice, l'efficacia dell'argomentazione, l'originale impostazione epistemologica e le numerose novita anatomiche che riporta garantirono al libro, pur nell'assenza d'ogni pictura, uno straordinario successo in tutta Europa: gia tre anni dopo la princeps (in-folio) il trattato veniva riedito a Parigi dal Gillius, dal Wechelus e dal Foucherius. In queste diverse edizioni (in-8) come nelle altre e non poche successive, il formato minore e segno della grande diffusione del testo come manuale di studio; fu poi tradotto in tedesco dallo Schenck nel 1608, e variamente citato e riscritto in ambito anglosassone.Realdo venne ben presto considerato uno dei grandi innovatori della scienza anatomica del Cinquecento. Note sono le sue rivoluzionarie osservazioni su diastole e sistole, la cosiddetta scoperta del clitoride, la dimostrazione, controversa, della circolazione polmonare. Ma la presente edizione intende soprattutto rivelare lo sguardo nuovo del Colombo sul corpo umano e la nuova concezione dello studio su di esso: mediante la visione diretta, la perlustrazione autoptica, lo studioso deve sottoporre al vaglio dell'esperienza l'autorita dei maestri, antichi e recenti. Realdo si senti libero di proseguire la ricerca senza lasciarsi intimidire dalla grandezza speculativa del Vesalio: come scrisse sin dal 1548 in una lettera a Cosimo de' Medici, il suo desiderio era quello di realizzare un'opera per la quale [coloro che desiderano apprendere l'anatomia] habbino la veritade de la cosa, et che si puossa, mentre che si fa la anatomia studiarla.Dopo un'ampia Introduzione che lumeggia i diversi aspetti dell'opera - la biografia di Realdo, la sua cultura, il contesto storico, le novita scientifiche, la genesi e lo stile del testo e le peculiarita dell'edizione -, il presente volume offre un testo latino criticamente riveduto e un'attenta versione italiana riccamente annotata. I termini anatomici usati da Realdo sono seguiti, ove bisogni, dai corrispondenti termini in uso nell'anatomia moderna. Chiudono il volume un'Appendice e degli indispensabili indici.
