About the Book

Until I read this heartbreaking and deeply moving collection of poems, I thought there was only one way to die: you die, and that is it (no more, no less). However, delving into what I want to call Jacqueline Loweree's "confabulation of the blade" I have come to realize (it has struck me, it has overwhelmed me) that one dies, at least, in two ways: one, a gigantic mammoth that inchesalong the path of our future until its final, slow, calculated, and even, anticipated crash; and the other, spectacular without the spectacle, explosive slash, definitive cannon disdainful by its implacability. Lead and gunpowder. The reader will find here both forms of suffering and beauty. But, despite the dead peonies, the rot of love, the nonexistent udders (in one of her many masterful moments, Loweree queries: "What's the use of asking / to drink / when the swollen udder / was only / the longing / of the foal / in a desert?") of invading disillusionment, of the cruelty of tenderness, of the violation of freedom, of Icarus' melted wax, there will also remain, after the alchemy of this poet who has looked the sun in the face, space for future vegetation, the truth of the bipolarity between Eden and the inferno, and, above all, on the same staircase leading to heaven and hell, poems as round as bullets. What dreadful delicacy. What liberation from chains. What a poet.
