Nouvelle au Coll�ge de France, la chaire de gram maire compar�e n� date pourtant pas d'aujourd'hui. Elle a �t� institu�e, il y a douze ans, � la Facult� des lettres, et M. Base, qui en fut alors charg�, a termin� par cet en seignement sa vie longue et bien remplie de savant et de professeur. Par son �ducation litt�raire, M. Base appar tenait� l'�cole des Heyne et des Villoison, et il avait de puis longtemps marqu� sa place � leurs c�t�s, quand les premiers r�sultats de la linguistique arriv�rent � sa con naissance. Mais il ne con�ut pas contre la science nou velle les sentiments de hauteur ou de d�dain qui se sont fait jour chez quelques philologues �trangers. La bien veillance de son caract�re, non moins que la largeur de son esprit, le pr�serv�rent de cette faiblesse. Tout en continuant de se vouer de pr�f�rence aux travaux qui avaient assur� sa renomm�e, il suivit avec attention les progr�s de la grammaire compar�e. Lorsque, en 1852, il fut charg� de cet enseignement, il y apporta sa connais sance profonde des idiomes classiques. Quant � la m� thode comparative, elle lui �tait famili�re, au moins par un de ses c�t�s, car il l'appliquait en ma�tre aux diverses �poques de la langue grecque. Quand M. Base, soit dans sa belle �dition du Thesaurus, soit dans son cours, retra�ait l'histoire d'un mot grec et le suivait, � travers toutes ses transformations, depuis Hom�re jusqu'aux �crivains byzantins ou jusqu'aux chants populaires de la Gr�ce moderne, il faisait pour la langue hell�nique ce que la grammaire compar�e essaye de faire pour l'ensemble de la famille indo - europ�enne. Nous l'avons vu, pendant douze ans, et presque jusqu'� la derni�re heure, parcourir d'un pas lent, mais s�r, le cercle de son ensei gnement, m�lant � ses le�ons des digressions qu'il savait toujours rendre instructives, et semant sur son chemin les tr�sors d'une �rudition exacte, curieuse et attrayante.

Cependant je ne voudrais pas affirmer que le cours de M. Base r�pondit exactement� l'id�e qu'on peut se faire, d'apr�s les grands travaux de ce si�cle, d'un cours de grammaire c'ompar�e. Ce qui caract�rise cette science nouvelle, c'est moins encore le nombre des idiomes qui forment la mati�re des observations que la m�thode qui pr�side aux rapprochements et la direction g�n�rale des recherches. De tout temps on a compar� le latin au grec, et les langues anciennes aux langues modernes; mais le go�t avait plus de part � ces comparaisons que la rigueur scientifique, et les observations, qui pouvaient �tre justes, n'�taient ni assez approfondies, ni assez encha�n�es entre elles. Quand on relit aujourd'hui le livre ing�nieux o� le pr�sident de Brosses exposait ses vues sur l'origine du langage, ou le m�moire, d'ailleurs si remarquable, que Fr�ret acompos� sur la parent� des langues de l'europe, ou �prouve la m�me impression que doit ressentir le g�ologue ou le physiologiste, en se reportant aux th�ories hypoth�tiques ou aux classifications superficielles du der nier si�cle. Ce n'�tait pas la sagacit� ni le savoir qui manquaient � de Brosses et � Fr�ret; il leur manquait deux choses un terme de comparaison pour classer les faits qu'ils avaient observ�s, et un instrument de pr�ci sion pour rendre les observations plus s�res et plus com pl�tes. La d�couverte du sanscrit vint fournir l'un et l'autre.
