A l'aise dans presque toutes les litteratures europeennes et slaves, Rene Wellek (1903-1995) -designe par certains de ses contemporains comme le " critique des critiques " et par d'autres, saisis par la fievre contestataire des annees soixante, de survivant d'un age perime- a su imposer de l'ordre dans les phenomenes litteraires les plus disparates et contrer les abus de lectures extravagantes et des modes ephemeres a succes. Refusant des doctrines litteraires strictement utilitaires, il denonce la prise en compte d'une oeuvre sous un angle purement exterieur servant de pretexte a des commentaires politiquement corrects. Pour lui, la methode ne peut pas se separer de son objet, car l'oeuvre elle-meme est philosophie. Comme Kant, il defend le domaine esthetique contre toute incursion: contre la reduction de l'art a un stimulus qui declenche une reaction emotionelle, contre l'apparence trompeuse d'un vernis moral qui masque l'indigence du discours sous de bons sentiments, et contre une approche intellectualiste qui fait de l'art une forme appauvrie du savoir, une philosophie de pacotille depourvue de systeme. Mais, malgre son admiration pour Kant et son refus de subordonner l'oeuvre litteraire a la raison pratique, Wellek ne veut pas non plus minimiser l'importance des donnees empiriques et annonce plutot une synthese: l'oeuvre est a la fois un evenement historique et un phenomene esthetique porteur de valeurs qui lui sont propres. Et justement, il appartient a Wellek, le porte-parole des grands courants critiques des trois derniers siecles, de ne jamais abdiquer sa fonction d'ultime arbitre, comme le constatera le lecteur de ce volume.
