Cuius generis exemplum nullo dum interprete quantum sciano expeditum hic paucis tractate liceat.

L. Annaeus Seneca philosophus in epistula octogesima tertia ad Lucilium data, qua vitae quotidianae ordinem et rationem illi exponit, de currendi exercitatione haec verba habet: quomoa'o tamen hodiemum certamen nobis cesserz't quaerz's? Quod raro cursorz'bus evenit, Meran fecimus. Nulla est in libris manuscriptis lectìonis discrepantia; sed quae traduntur, tantis laborant difficultatibus, ut vix mireris fuisse qui de corruptela cogitarent. Emendandi sane conatus non feliciter cessit; nam si missas facimus, ut par est, ineptissimas quasdam anti quissimarum editionum interpolationes, ex recentioribus duos modo hanc viam ingressos videmus. Ex quibus Fickertus quidem valde suspectam indicavit hanc scripturam, sed nihil aliud se extricate ingenue professas est. Matthiaeus vero qaum primo ìegòv (se. &yaîva) rescribere conatus esset, postea ad reliquorum interpretum rationem se accommodavit. Namque longe maxima pars editorum interpretando, non emendando loci difficultatibus succurrere studebat. Qua in re tamem haudquaquam convenit inter eos, sed in duas partes discesserunt, quorum duces ao signiferi exstiterunt Marcus Antonius Muretus et Iustus Lìpsius viri clarissimi. Ao Muretas quidem cum asseclis femininam adiectivi ìegàv formam nominis quod est yga, u, mfu ellipsi explicant; sed de huius lineae vi ao natura rursus in diversas partes discedunt, cum alii de sacra quadam linea verba faciant, quae in medio stadio fuerit, alii similitudinem atque imaginem cal culorum ludo repetitam agnoscant. At contra illos quidem, quorum in numero ipse Muretas est, iam Lipsius breviter sed verissime monuit, de eiusmodi linea nihil usquam traditum esse. Nam linea quidem (ygoqumf) in stadio nonnunquam commemoratur (v. Lips. Ad Sen. Ep. Sed ea neque sacra vocatur neque buo omnino quadrat, quippe quae finem cursus sive metam significet, cum Muretus potins in medio cursus spatio illam suam sacram lineam fuisse finxerit. Adde quod tota... res incredibilis est ao paeme ridicula. Nam ut ]argiar causam aliquam cogi tari posse, cur medium cursus Spatium linea obducta significaretur, etsi ego quidem nullam eius instituti utilitatem perspicio, sic quod Muretas excogitavit ah omni probabilitate plane abborret, ideo ancipitem fuisse certaminis eventum, quia uterque cum ad illam m'ediam lineam pervenisset, prae lassitudine amplias procurrere non quivisset. Anceps fieri potuit certamen cursus, quia uterque simul ad metam perveniebat; at propterea neutrum cursorem victorem evasisee, quia defatigati outsum perficere non potuissent, per se inauditum est. Verum enim vero hoc idem utrique cursori in eodem temporis locique vestigio accidisse, atque insuper in eo ipso, quo totum stadium medium dividitur, id quidem omnium absurdissimum est. Cave vero Mureti sententiam ita emendare coneris, ut ficticia illa linea media reiècta îegàv yga'u'uìyl/ ipsam metam interpreteris.
