El autor que fue capaz de crear tantas obras maestras y de entre ellas la que destaca con autoridad como cima de la historia del séptimo arte, tendrá siempre en quien esto escribe a un apasionado admirador que nunca podrá reintegrar todo cuanto le ha hecho disfrutar.

El presente libro disfraza su vocación de ensayo sobre aspectos de la filmografía de Alfred Hitchcock adoptando la estructura literaria de relato, en un intento porque su lectura se pueda amenizar. Así, las aventuras que el mismo John "Scottie" Ferguson nos narra trascenderán su originaria ubicación en "Vértigo" para visitar otras diez populares películas del maestro británico, en una alucinante trama que propone muchas de las constantes que a la obra de este gran artista vienen a caracterizar.

Al igual que en todo trabajo de investigación, aquí se recogen bastantes aportaciones anteriores de otros autores y se incorporan algunas novedades como por ejemplo lo es una aparición no catalogada del Director, localizada en "Atrapa a un ladrón" (1955), en el momento en que John Robie (Cary Grant) junto a Danielle Foussard (Brigitte Auber) abandonan Montecarlo en lancha y vemos a un "sospechoso" pescador sentado al borde del malecón (min. 16:54), cuya postura y sombrero se asemejan a cierta posterior aparición del propio Cary Grant (min. 1:13:37), en una nueva constatación del conocido deseo del Director por parecerse al mítico galán.

Además del análisis implícito de muchas de las licencias de guion, se plantean las correspondientes a las falsas localizaciones y otros trampantojos que la magia del cine se encarga de velar. Asimismo, quedan especificadas las arquetípicas caracterizaciones de personajes que se repiten en la filmografía de este creador y que aquí se relacionarán aprovechando los acontecimientos en los que estos se vienen a mezclar. De manera tácita son propuestas muchas referencias y juegos de adivinación, como el de la mayoría de los títulos de la filmografía de Hitchcock, que aparecen confundidos con el desarrollo de la narración a la espera de poderlos identificar. También, ciertos roles adquieren datos biográficos de quienes fueron sus intérpretes, añadiendo magia a un realismo que, como le ocurre al protagonista, desde el comienzo no parece tal.

La historia narrada es deudora de "Vértigo-De entre los muertos" (1958), la obra maestra absoluta de Alfred Hitchcock que con merecida justicia el transcurso de los años ha situado en el primer puesto de las preferencias de cuantos entienden la cinematografía como indiscutible séptimo arte y por tanto vehículo de expresión del genio humano, situándose respecto de la música, la pintura, la literatura o la arquitectura en un plano estético de merecida igualdad. Tan es así que quien esto escribe no duda en considerar que "Vértigo" es comparable a sublimes manifestaciones del arte universal como lo puedan ser, el canto a la fraternidad de la Novena Sinfonía de Beethoven, la exaltación de la deidad en la Capilla Sixtina de Miguel Ángel, la disputa entre la utopía y la realidad del Quijote de Cervantes o ese primoroso homenaje a la posteridad que es el mausoleo del Taj Mahal. Al igual, "Vértigo" se erige como la más apasionada descripción del enamoramiento (que no amor), la mayor fuerza que mueve en el ser humano su actuar.

"De entre los vivos" debe a "De entre los muertos" todo porque todo en esta, está.
