Excerpt from De Arte Amatoria Libri Tres

Sie ist in unserer Zeit auffallig vernachlassigt worden. Schon im Jahre 1893 klagt ein kompetenter Beurteiler der romischen Elegie, K. P. Schulze, in einem Berliner Programm über die 'auf fallende Thatsache, dass in Deutschland seit Jahren so viel kritische Ausgaben der römischen Elegiker und so wenig erklärende er schienen sind'. Die vorliegende Arbeit will einen bescheidenen Bei trag zur Erklärung Ovids liefern. Gerade aber die Ars Amatoria, unübertroffen durch geistvoll spielenden Witz und durchdrungen von feinster Psychologie, anziehend an sich und höchst interessant durch die reichen und lohnenden Ausblicke auf die Kultur und Sittengeschichte einer Weltstadt, verdient eine geschmackvolle Inter pretation. Zu oft tappt der Leser der Ars im Dunkeln: sei es nun, dass er das Gedicht um seiner selbst willen lesen will, so wird er oft aufgehalten durch die Fülle von Anspielungen auf Antiquitäten, Kultus, Mythologie, die er sich erst notdürftig zurecht suchen muss, um doch bei sehr vielen Stellen unbefriedigt zu bleiben, oder dass er das Gedicht benutzen will zu näherer Kenntnis einer kultur geschichtlich höchst interessanten Zeit, so fehlt es auch hier immer wieder an dem notwendigen Material. Aus solchen Erwagungen heraus ist das Buch entstanden, nur für die eben skizzierten Klassen von Lesern ist es geschrieben, aber nichts lag mir ferner als der Gedanke, einen das letzte und abschliessende Wort in der Er läuterung der Liebeskunst sprechenden Kommentar zu schafien. Mir kam es zunachst einmal darauf an, das Rohmaterial zu ver arbeiten, das Gedicht so zu erklären, wie es uns vorliegt, und andere sehr wesentliche Untersuchungen, wie z. B. Die Darstellung der Beziehungen der Ars zur Komodie müssen anderen Arbeiten vorbehalten werden. Damit hängt es auch zusammen, dass ich mich nicht entschliessen konnte, gleichzeitig mit der Ars eine Be arbeitung des unter dem Namen mediramz'na faciei auf uns ge kommenen Fragmentes und der remedz'a amoris zu unternehmen. Ovid hat seinen Lesern die drei Werke auch nicht als ein unbedingt zusammengehöriges Ganze vorgelegt, sondern gab die Ars als ein selbständiges und für sich durchaus bestehendes Kunstwerk heraus. Ich vermag schlechterdings nicht einzusehen, warum man nicht in demselben Sinne die Ars fur sich allein herausgeben und inter pretieren dürfte. Dass dabei die beiden anderen Gedichte nicht ignoriert werden, versteht sich natürlich von selbst: aber ebenso selbstverständlich ist es, dass nicht der Kommentar der Ars das Verhältnis dieses Gedichtes zu den Remedia bis ins kleinste zu ver folgen hat, sondern dass es einer Bearbeitung der Remedia vor behalten bleiben muss, darzustellen, wie sich diese Pseud0palinodie zu der eigentlich originellen Schöpfung, der Ars, verhält. Oder um mich noch klarer auszudrucken: Ich habe mich schlechterdings nicht dazu entschliessen konnen, die Ars zum Gegenstande eines philologischen Kommentars in herkömmlichem Sinne zu machen, vor allem ängstlich bemüht, nur gar keine Beziehung zu übersehen.
