Pour commencer par le commencement, je dirai donc que je suis né un vendredi, à minuit (du moins on me l'a dit, et je le crois). Et chose digne de remarque, l'horloge commença à sonner, et moi, je commençai à crier, au même instant. Vu le jour et l'heure de ma naissance, la garde de ma mère et quelques commères du voisinage qui me portaient le plus vif intérêt longtemps avant que nous pussions faire mutuellement connaissance, déclarèrent: 1° que j'étais destiné à être malheureux dans cette vie; 2° que j'aurais le privilège de voir des fantômes et des esprits. Tout enfant de l'un ou de l'autre sexe assez malheureux pour naître un vendredi soir vers minuit possédait invariablement, disaient-elles, ce double don. Je ne m'occupe pas ici de leur première prédiction. La suite de cette histoire en prouvera la justesse ou la fausseté. Quant au second point, je me bornerai à remarquer que j'attends toujours, à moins que les revenants ne m'aient fait leur visite quand j'étais encore à la mamelle. Ce n'est pas que je me plaigne de ce retard, bien au contraire: et même si quelqu'un possède en ce moment cette portion de mon héritage, je l'autorise de tout mon coeur à la garder pour lui. Je suis né coiffé on mit ma coiffe en vente par la voie des annonces de journaux, au très-modique prix de quinze guinées. Je ne sais si c'est que les marins étaient alors à court d'argent, ou s'ils n'avaient pas la foi et préféraient se confier à des ceintures de liège, mais ce qu'il y a de positif, c'est qu'on ne reçut qu'une seule proposition; elle vint d'un courtier de commerce qui offrait cinquante francs en argent, et le reste de la somme en vin de Xérès: il ne voulait pas payer davantage l'assurance de ne jamais se noyer. On renonça donc aux annonces qu'il fallut payer, bien entendu. Quant au xérès, ma pauvre mère venait de vendre le sien, ce n'était pas pour en acheter d'autre. Dix ans après on mit ma coiffe en loterie, à une demi-couronne le billet, il y en avait cinquante, et le gagnant devait ajouter cinq shillings en sus. J'assistai au tirage de la loterie, et je me rappelle que j'étais fort ennuyé et fort humilié de voir ainsi disposer d'une portion de mon individu. La coiffe fut gagnée par une vieille dame qui tira, bien à contre-coeur, de son sac les cinq shillings en gros sols, encore y manquait-il un penny; mais ce fut en vain qu'on perdit son temps et son arithmétique à en convaincre la vieille dame. Le fait est que tout le monde vous dira dans le pays qu'elle ne s'est pas noyée, et qu'elle a eu le bonheur de mourir victorieusement dans son lit à quatre-vingt- douze ans. On m'a raconté que, jusqu'à son dernier soupir, elle s'est vantée de n'avoir jamais traversé l'eau, que sur un pont: souvent en buvant son thé (occupation qui lui plaisait fort), elle s'emportait contre l'impiété de ces marins et de ces voyageurs qui ont la présomption d'aller vagabonder au loin. En vain on lui représentait que sans cette coupable pratique, on manquerait de bien de petites douceurs, peut-être même de thé.
