Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: War vor einigen Jahre der Einsatz von Informationssystemen im Marketing eher eine Ausnahmeerscheinung, so besteht heute ein allgemeiner Konsens, daß der Erfolg von Unternehmen immer stärker durch Faktoren bestimmt wird, die sich aus Informationsvorteilen gegenüber Wettbewerbern ergeben. Durch einen Markt in dem kaum neue Betätigungsfelder zu erschließen sind, rückt bei den Handelsunternehmen die Senkung von Kosten in den Wertschöpfungsketten in den Vordergrund. Die undifferenzierte Kundenansprache der klassischen Massenmedien wird dabei immer weniger als adäquates Kommunikationsmittel empfunden, einer zunehmend individualisierten Gesellschaft in ihren Bedürfnissen gerecht zu werden. Das Database Marketing umfaßt nur einen Teil der informationstechnischen Umwälzungen. Seine Wirkung kann es daher erst durch Zusammenwirken mit anderen Technologien voll entfalten. Gleichwohl bietet es auch kleineren Unternehmen die Möglichkeit die moderne Informationstechnologie gewinnbringend einzusetzen. Das Interessen an einer Implementierung und Nutzung eines solchen ist daher in Hersteller und Handelsunternehmen, gleich welchen Betriebstyps und Betriebsgröße ungebrochen. Gang der Untersuchung: Das erste Kapitel der Untersuchung behandelt die Grundlagen der für das Verständnis der Untersuchung relevanten Sachgebiete. Es enthält neben einer Abgrenzung des Themenbereichs einen kurzen Überblick über die Entwicklung der informationstechnischen Einrichtungen im Marketing. Hierdurch soll die Einordnung des Database Marketing in den umfassenden Kontext des Computer Aided Marketing erleichtert werden. Das zweite Kapitel beschreibt die Funktionsweise von Marketing-Datenbanken. Dabei soll wird vereinzelt auf die inforrnationstechnologischen Zusammenhänge eingegangen, die für das Verständnis der Arbeit hilfreich sind.
