Die Zellteilung gehOrt zu denjenigen Sonderproblemen der Wissenschaft, die neben ihrem speziellen faktischen und sogar praktischem Interesse eine Anzahl allgemeiner, tieferer Frage- stellungen wachrufen, die unmittelbar in die Kernprobleme der Wissenschaft eingreifen. Der Forscher, der dieses Gebiet in ab- gerundeter Weise darzustellen wagt, kann daher nicht umhin, auch seine Grundanschauungen auf dem Gesamtgebiete seiner Wissenschaft zu revidieren und zum Ausdruck zu bringen. 1st ja die Zellteilung nur ein Sonderfall der Vermehrung, die von allen Problemen der Biologie, dasjenige des VerhiHtnisses zwischen Psychischem und Physischem vielleicht ausgenommen, unserem Auffassungsvermogen am meisten Schwierigkeiten bereitet. DaB ein Individuum durch Teilung zwei neue, mit ihm im wesentlichen iibereinstimmende Individuen erzeugt, ist ein Pro- blem, dessen enorme Schwierigkeit in dem Inhalte all des sen enthalten ist, was wir mit dem Begriff eines organischen Indivi- duums verkniipfen. Man kann sich die Tatsache der Zweiteilung resp. Reproduktion eines Individuums verstandlich machen und sogar Modelle zu deren Erlauterung ersinnen, wenn man sich der Fiktion hergibt, die Zweiteilung sei eine doppelte Reproduktion eines Systems mit einem bestimmten Gleichgewichtszustande, etwa nach Analogie mit einer Halbierung eines Fliissigkeits- tropfens, die bestimmten Storungen des urspriinglichen Gleich- gewichtszustandes desselben nachfolgt und zur Bildung zweier Tropfen mit Wiederherstellung des urspriinglichen Gleichgewichtes fiihrt. Diese Analogie, die tatsachlich ofters ins Feld gefiihrt wird, konnte einigermaBen zutreffen, wenn Organismen als "explizite"l) Systeme betrachtet werden konnten. 1) Der Ausdruck "explizit" wie seine Antithese "implizit" wird hier in einem Sinne gebraucht, der sich, wenn auch in freier Weise, dem Sprachgebrauche der Analyse anlehnt.
